Jack_duckworth_outside_rovers_with_pint_ No 23 Jack Duckworth How could we not put Jack and his little swamp duck Vera together today?  The two of them come as a pair, inseparable (although they’ve tried many times, both of them, to make their escape from each other).  Salt of the earth Jack has been workshy in his time, preferring to skive off than to put a decent shift in at the Rovers when he and Vera were running the place. Unlike his missus, Jack sees son Terry for the bad ‘un that he is, although Terry remains the apple of his mother’s eye.
Most famous for: Losing money on the gee-gees, looking after his pigeons, enjoying his beer. Should Jack be in our Top 50 list at No 23 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Vera_duckworth_peeping_out_of_window_1 No 24 Vera Duckworth Gobby, gossipy, nosy Vera Duckworth is a stalwart of Coronation Street. She’s made Jack’s life a misery for years but the truth is, they’d be lost without each other and love each deeply, despite their differences!  She’s not afraid to say what she thinks and has been a hard working woman, at the factory under Mike Baldwin’s regime with her mate Ivy and now in the café working part time at Roy’s Rolls.
Most famous for: Thinking she’s related to Royalty, cooking Jack’s pigeon in a pie. Should Vera be in our Top 50 list at No 24 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Tyrone_dobbs_4 No 25 Tyrone Dobbs Coming in halfway down our Top 50 countdown is Tyrone Dobbs. He’s got a lot in common with Chesney Battersby-Brown – their horrible Coronation Street mums! Jackie Dobbs dumped Tyrone on the cobbles to fend for himself. With such a harsh upbringing from his jailbird mum, Tyrone could have been a right old tearaway but so far has stuck to the straight and narrow (well, more or less).   He’s cuddly, he’s lovely and he’s not afraid to cry – or have his chest waxed!  He’s had his heart broken more than once and is super-sensitive where women are concerned.
Most famous for: Being the son that Jack and Vera always wanted, having his chest waxed by Maria in the salon. Should Tyrone be in our Top 50 list at No 25 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far

Mavis_riley_76_1No.26 Mavis Riley Thelma Barlow portrayed Mavis from 1971 until 1997. In the early years, nervy Mavis engaged in an on/off relationship with the equally-nervy Jerry Booth, as well as having a "way with Spaniards". In 1974, Mavis joined Rita Littlewood to work in the newly opened Kabin in Rosamund Street embarking on a famous 23 year double act. In 1976, she met sales rep, Derek Wilton. As with Jerry, Mavis's relationship with Derek was also very hit-and-miss, and was punctuated by her liaisons with Victor Pendlebury. Derek and Mavis almost got as far as the alter in 1984, but they both jilted each other (The Wilton Jiltin' !). They met again a few years later and eventually tied the knot in November 1988. Derek died of a heart attack in 1997, and the devastated Mavis left Weatherfield for a new life in the Lakes soon afterwards.

Most famous for : Budgies, being dizzy, saying "I don't really know", and being called a "Jezebel" by Derek after he came home to find love rival, Victor Pendlebury, massaging her feet. Check out our Top 50 so far. [Sky Clearbrook]

Minnie_caldwell_500_1 No 27 Minnie Caldwell Ah, the 1960s. Mini cars, mini skirts, Minnie Caldwell. Beneath that fragile exterior, Minnie was a lot stronger than people guessed at first. Ena Sharples often used her as a verbal sparring partner, instigating arguments with Minnie and generally putting her down whenever she could. It was all water off a duck’s back to Minnie.  Minnie, Ena and Martha Longhurst were the original threesome in the snug, repeated today in a Coronation Street triumvirate of gossipy old women like Rita, Emily and Norris!
Most famous for: Having Bobby the cat as her pet, taking in Sunny Jim as a lodger. Should Minnie be in our Top 50 list at No 27 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far

Watts_raquel1997Raquel Watts (nee Wolstenhulme) Oh Raquel, how we loved you. To some you were the archetypal tart with a heart, a ditzy blonde with hidden depths and a wonderful sense of comic timing.

But you were more than that. We laughed with you, never at you. We cried when you longed for an escape to a better life.

Dallying with modelling and earning the Miss Bettabuys title proved a pasing fancy. Dallying with lowly ranking footballers and press officers proved bittersweet and was never going to be good enough for you.

You found your new life with a widowed French wine producer. Ever-reliable, sweet Curly gave you his blessing, but not before one of the most memorable episodes of Corrie ever.

Good luck Raquel wherever you are. What would I give to see you return one day? I know. Aint never gonna happen.

Most famous for: Learning to speak French with Ken Barlow, breaking Curly's heart. So is the wonderful Raquel high enough up the list? You decide! Here's the rest. [Linda]

Mikebaldwin_2Mike Baldwin. Poor Mike, what an ending. For me, this Corrie jewel was a character with whom, it's fair to say, I had a love-hate relationship.

Tributes were lavished on Johnny Briggs as a fitting farewell to one of the Street's most revered characters and it seemed the whole nation discussed the tragedy of Alzheimer's  when he left earlier this year.

Here's what Nora wrote at the time. Just about sums him up I reckon. Nuff said.

Most famous for: Copping off with Deirdre, smoking big fat cigars, losing Alma and not treating staff so well, really. Oh and then there were the women. What do you think? Of his place in the list, I mean, not the women. Check out the rest of the Top 50 here. [Linda]

Spider_and_em_up_tree_500_2 No 30 Emily Bishop Much as I love Emily, her character’s been a bit lacking these days but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had her share of excitement over the years, especially when nephew Spider was about. A church-going, Coronation Street do-gooder, Emily never gossips and rarely says anything bad about anyone, unless the stress of living with Norris winds her up too much.
Most famous for: Collecting for the church, mourning Ernie, joining the campaign to save the red rec.  Should Emily be in our Top 50 list at No 30 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far

Roy_cropper_4 No 31 Roy Cropper I wish I could have put Roy higher on the Top 50 list but the competition is starting to get really tough now so it’s with a heavy heart that he’s in at No. 31.  Train-spotter, pedant, Coronation Street café owner, kind to children and animals and not a bad bone in his body. There’s nothing to fault Roy for.  He has the answer to every question and can cook up a mean beans on toast as well as designing energy efficient contraptions.
Most famous for: Having his keys tied to the inside of his shopping bag, marrying Corrie’s first transsexual character.  Should Roy be in our Top 50 list at No 31 – what do you think?  Check out our Top 50 so far.

Leanne_battersby_6 No 32 Leanne Battersby Rough as they come but what do you expect with Les Battersby for a dad and Janice for a step-mum?  There’s no soft centre with this one, she’s dog-rough and hard all the way through.  Leanne came into Coronation Street like a superannuated Spice Girl and left with a lump sum of money she’d swindled out of Danny-boy Baldwin.  Had an ill-fated short-lived marriage to Nicky Tilsley, something for which Gail Platt will never forgive her for.
Most famous for: Being the first Corrie woman to get into hard drugs, with Jez Quigley when she worked at the Rovers. Should Leanne be in our Top 50 list at No 32 – what do you think?  Check out our Top 50 so far.

Audrey_roberts_and_alf_roberts_kissAudrey_roberts_snog_bill_webster_1  No 33 Audrey Roberts Ah, the fragrant Mrs Roberts, ageing disgracefully and quickly becoming the slapper of the OAP shampoo and set crowd.  Coronation Street hair-salon owner and widow of Alfie, Audrey (played by Sue Nicholls) has been around the block once or twice and is no stranger to a fella and a free drink.
Most famous for: Turning down Fred Elliot’s proposal to her – twice, before he popped his clogs on her welcome mat on his wedding day to Bev. Should Audrey be in our Top 50 list at No 33 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Cilla_battersby_brown No 34 Cilla Battersby-Brown The mother from hell to Fiz and Chesney. She’s loud, not proud, and quite a nasty gossip.  Cilla sees nowt wrong in clearing out the family cupboards and selling stuff on ebay then spending the funds on a holiday in the sun with mate Yana – while her family starve at home.   No scruples, no morals and not a bleedin’ clue – but great fun to watch on Coronation Street.
Most famous for: Wedding day to Les with her hair curled into three sixes on her forehead. Should Cilla be in our Top 50 list at No 34 – what do you think? Check our our Top 50 so far.

Chesney_battersby_brown_with_dog_2 No 35 Chesney Battersby-Brown  Cute and cuddly Chesney Battersby-Brown is a little gem. Sam Aston who plays Chesney is a cracking actor, which really brings life to the little fella on the cobbles. And he loves his Great Dane, Schmeicel too. Passed from social worker to various “uncles” as a kid by horrid mum Cilla, Chesney keeps smiling on Coronation Street and was over the moon when step-dad Les Battersby adopted him and made him double-barrelled.
Most famous for: Turning out quite normal despite being raised by gorilla Cilla. Should Chesney be in our Top 50 list at No 35 – what do you think? Check our our Top 50 so far.

Len_faircloughNo. 36 Len Fairclough The late Peter Adamson portrayed builder and councillor, Len Fairclough, from 1961 until 1983. Len liked a drink and thought of himself as a bit of a hardman. In 1962, Ken Barlow described him as a "loud-mouthed, beer-swilling moron" and they came to blows in the Rovers (they later made up and went on to become the best of buddies in the 1970s).

Elsie Tanner always held a special place in his heart, and Len was a frequent visitor to No.11. Although there was a certain chemistry between them, they were never anything more than friends. Nevertheless, his wife, (the never-seen) Nellie, left him for another man taking their son, Stanley, with her. He proceeded to buy No.9 and gave lodgings to Ray Langton and Jerry Booth. From there, he led the life of a bachelor, dating a number of Weatherfield ladies, beginning an on/off relationship with singer, Rita Littlewood, in 1972. They later married in 1977 and had a number of happy years together, fostering John Spencer and Sharon Gaskell along the way, until Len was killed in a car crash in 1983 (on his way to see his fancywoman, as Rita was to discover later).
Most famous for : Drinking, fighting and rebuilding No.7. Check our our Top 50 so far. [Sky Clearbrook]

Charlie_stubbs_pensive_1 No 37 Charlie Stubbs A complex man, this Charlie Stubbs fella.  The bully-boy builder has caused nothing but bother, heartache and misogynistic, mental manipulation since he joined Coronation Street. Bill Ward who plays Charlie has been keen to get involved with and support domestic abuse charities to fend off the idea that he could ever be as horrid as his on-screen character.  Has Charlie met his match in toxic-Tracy Barlow? Could be, as we hear he meets his maker when Tracy kills him off early next year.
Most famous for: Some of the nastiest scenes of violence towards the Street’s women we can ever remember. Oh, and for dunking David Platt. Just who did put the ram in the ramalamadingdong? Should Charlie be in the Top 50 at No 37 – what do you think?  Check our our Top 50 so far.

Ken_60sNo. 38 Ken Barlow Where do we start ? William Roache has portrayed Ken Barlow since the very first episode in December 1960 and he's still going strong. Early episodes saw a young, university-educated, Ken trying to break free of his grimy, working class background, much to the chagrin of his father, Frank, with whom he clashed frequently. However, it would be fair to say that Ken's complicated lovelife has provided most of this character's drama down the years.

In 1962, he married Valerie Tatlock and they had twins, Peter and Susan, in 1965. Ken and Val were all set to leave Weatherfield for a new life in Jamaica in early 1971, but Val was tragically electrocuted. The twins went off to stay with family in Glasgow, and returned to see Ken every now and again. After playing the field for a few years, Ken married Janet Reid in 1973. The marriage was not too last, and Janet ended up committing suicide in 1977. In 1981, Ken married for a third time. The lucky lady this time was divorcee, Deirdre Langton.

Ivy_tilsley_brian_tilsley_1 No 39 Ivy Tilsley The Coronation Street mother-in-law from hell! Poison Ivy made Gail Tilsley’s life a living misery (and that can only be a good thing, surely?).  Ivy was a staunch Roman Catholic with very strict views on the way other people should lead their lives. She wasn’t afraid to voice her opinions, was mean-mouthed, tight-lipped and a nasty piece of work.  Ivy was played by Lynne Perrie from 1971-1994 and was mother of Brian who married Gail. She liked her bingo, her mates at Baldwin’s factory but when Brian was murdered the focus of her life changed and she became a bit too obsessed with the welfare of grandson Nicky Tilsley, interfering in Gail’s life.
Most famous for: The scene where the ghost of Ivy was haunting the Street so a vicar (or was it Roy?) comes in to exorcise the cobbles with the incantation: “Omnibus, Trolleybus”. Can anyone else remember that or did I dream it? Should Ivy be in our Top 50 list at No 39 – what do you think?  Check out our Top 50 so far.

Sophie_webster_1 No 40 Sophie Webster How did they cast Sophie to look so much like her on-screen dad Kevin Webster? It's uncanny. Sophie Webster is the unsung hero in the Webster household. She's a little star, coming second fiddle to big sister Rosie in the eyes of pushy-mum Sally but she and dad Kevin share the same sense of humour and she's got a wicked attitude to life.   Sophie, played by Brooke Vincent has been in Coronation Street since 1994 and is currently mates with Chesney Battersby-Brown.
Most famous for: Wicked sense of humour, smoking, drinking and turning into a terrible teen, generally being willing to give anything a try, just once. Should Sophie be in our Top 50 list at No 40 - what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Alma_baldwin No 41 Alma Baldwin  Oh, lovely, lovely Alma with your shaggy dog hair. Watching Alma on Coronation Street was always a treat, like snuggling up with a particularly cosy duvet in front of the telly.   Alma was played by Amanda Barrie and was in Corrie on and off from 1981 to Alma’s death of cervical cancer in 2001.  Alma ran the café, put up with Mike’s philandering for too many years, drove a sports car and was almost killed by Don Brennan when he drove her into the canal in his cab. Alma had an affair with her best mate Audrey’s son Stephen when he flew in from Canada and she was also best friend to Hayley Cropper.
Most famous for: Saving women’s lives in the real-world after her on-screen death of cervical cancer prompted an unprecedented number of calls to cancer help-lines, overwhelming clinics and GP surgeries.  Should Alma be in our Top 50 list at No 41 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Kevin_webster_7 No 42 Kevin Webster  Garage owner Kevin has been played by Michael Le Vell and part of Coronation Street since 1983.  Kev is Weatherfield’s Neanderthal man, mucky and greasy by day and much the same by night. He’s the sort of bloke who expects his dinner on the table when he gets in from work and was up in arms when Sally first told him she wanted to go out to work.  He’s had affairs, been divorced from Sally, married Alison Wakefield and after she and their baby died in a road accident, married Sally again.
Most famous for: Having his moustache shaved off by Steph Barnes, having an affair with Natalie Horrocks and for putting up with Sally. Should Kev be in our Top 50 list at No 42 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Paris_rosie No 43 Rosie Webster Rosie, currently played by Helen Flanagan (there have been loads of Rosie actresses in the past) has been part of Coronation Street since the day she was born. The Goth phase wasn’t Rosie’s first time at rebelling against her parents, oh no. She’s always been a bit of a rebel, has Rosie, running away from home and even bullying other kids at school.  She’s the apple of pushy-mum Sally’s eye who’ll stop at nothing to help her daughter succeed whether it’s enrolling her in singing and dancing classes or paying for private education.
Most famous for: Being named after Rosamund Street where she was born in the back of a taxi on Christmas Eve 1990. Being Corrie’s first female Goth. Should Rosie be in our Top 50 list at No 43 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Phyllis_percy_maude No 44 Phyllis Pearce Blue-rinsed Phyllis of the deep voice was always looking for a fella and chased  Percy Sugden the length and breadth of Coronation Street – but he wanted nowt to do with her.   Phyllis (pictured on the left) was played by Jill Summers and was in Corrie from 1982 to 1996.  She worked in Jim’s café with Gail Platt but was retired when Alma Sedgewick bought the place. She was also housekeeper to Des Barnes.

Most famous for: Chasing Percy Sugden, having blue hair.  Should Phyllis be in our Top 50 list at No 44 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Dev_alahan_the_devster_2 No 45 Dev Alahan  Part-ey! Dev Alahan first appeared in Corrie in 1999, owns half of all the corner shops in the north-west and seems to have fathered a clan of kids, many of which we still probably don’t know about. Daughter Amber is currently making his life a misery, which can only be a good thing.  Dev (played by Jimmi Harkishin) is a self-confessed ladies man, having had flings with just about everyone, including – in what must be one of the most yuck scenes ever in Coronation Street  – shagging Deirdre Barlow!  After Mad Maya exploded his shops and blew his life to bits, Dev’s toned down the womanizing just in case he meets another nutter.
Most famous for: Shagging Deirdre! Losing Sunita and the twins and generally being a bit of a prat where women are concerned.  Also, he loves a good part-ey!  Should Dev be in our Top 50 list at No 45 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

Reggie_93No. 46 - Reg Holdsworth Reggie was the twitchy supermarket boss with an eye for the ladies. Ken Morley first appeared in 1989 as Curly's boss at Bettabuys. It was there that Reggie was reunited with old flame Maureen Naylor. They soon found their flame being reignited, and they went on to marry in January 1994. After a while, Reg's wandering eye got the better of him and he eventually left Weatherfield (and Maureen) in 1995 for a new life with Yvonne Bannister who was pregnant with his child.

Most famous for: The wig, his uneasy relationship with Maud Grimes (Maureen's battleaxe mother), and the ruined afternoon of waterbed passion. Should Reggie be appearing at No.46 in our list ? Tell us what you think. Check out our Top 50 so far[Sky Clearbrook]

Alf_roberts_as_mayor_with_annie_walker No. 47 Alf Roberts What’s not to like about Alf Roberts? He was an honest man, a pillar of the community and Mayor of Weatherfield too.  Alf was played by Bryan Mosley and was part of Coronation Street from 1961 to 1999 when he died in an armchair at Gail Platt’s New Year's Eve party. Alf used to run the corner shop with his wife, Renee but after she died and he married Audrey the shop wasn't good enough for her (ooh!) and she persuaded him to sell it.

Most famous for: Being awarded the OBE as Mayor of Weatherfield and having a street named after him, Alfred Roberts Wind. Should Alf be in our Top 50 list at No 47 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.
