It's all rather depressing. But in heartbreaking scenes to air later this year, Jack Duckworth (pictured here with lady friend Connie) will see the ghost of his wife Vera on his deathbed.
Bill Tarmey announced in April that he was leaving the ITV soap after three decades. Initially it was thought that he was going to be written out in the 50th anniversary tram crash, but it turns out that he is to die of cancer.
The Daily Star reports that his last lines will be him asking Vera (who was played by Liz Dawn) if it's warm where she is now.
From ITV.com: Mary sees red when she's banned from Roy and Hayley's wedding and tries put a kibosh on it. Hayley arranges for Roy to drive a steam train, carrying the wedding party, to the ceremony - but scary Mary manages to separate the carriages.
Hayley's helpless as an oblivious Roy and her excited guests drive off into the distance. Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley, said: "Mary will do all she can to spoil the day, but let me tell you Hayley's no Norris. Mary has met her match."

7.30pm: Becky sneaks off for a cigarette while she and Steve await the adoption panel's verdict, unaware that she is being watched. Natasha quizzes Fiz for information about her pregnancy in a bid to string Nick along as the couple move into Dev's flat, and Sally dashes Sophie's plans to meet Sian. Elsewhere, Owen asks Eileen out on a date.
8.30pm: After trying to argue their case, Steve is forced to drag an irate Becky from the room, only to discover that a damning reference from her half-sister Kylie spoiled their chances. Natasha resorts to seducing Nick in a desperate attempt to get pregnant again, and Chesney asks Katy to be his date at Roy and Hayley's wedding. Dev makes a grab at Aadi when he runs into the road.
7.30pm: Natasha keeps her abortion a secret as Nick enthuses about telling everyone the good news, before barging in on her appointment with the GP. John looks for a job to prove himself to Fiz, while Sian uses the church choir as a means of seeing Sophie. Steve fails to match Becky's commitment to adopting a child.
8.30pm: Fiz and John announce in the Rovers that they are starting a family and Natasha is horrified when Nick seizes the opportunity to break the news of her pregnancy, before finding Leanne in tears behind the pub. As Peter forces Deirdre to resign, John takes up the reins at the bookie's and sets fire to all Colin's papers, vowing to make a fresh start. But how long will it last?
7.30pm: Nick and Peter's rivalry leads to a punch-up in the Rovers. Natasha struggles to keep it together after her break-up. Will Bill retire and sell up to Owen?
8.30pm: Natasha interrupts an intimate moment between Nick and Leanne with a shocking announcement of her own. Deirdre and Ken are in turmoil. What will Bill's decision about the yard mean for Jason?
7.30pm: Deirdre tells Peter she did not take the bet that led to Lewis's big win, but her indiscretion is revealed by CCTV footage. Audrey fails to recognise what is meant as a goodbye kiss, Nick feels backed into a corner, and Sally discovers Sophie lied to her about attending the festival with Sian. Elsewhere, Molly tells Dev she is finishing at the shop, and an accident at work has Bill doubting his abilities
8.30pm: Desperate to stop Lewis leaving the country, Peter heads to the Platts'. At first, Audrey cannot believe her boyfriend's duplicity, but her worst fears are realised when the CCTV tape is replayed and, with the £100,000 about to be transferred, she makes a frantic call to the bank. Elsewhere, Natasha reveals her secret to Leanne after leaving the party in tears, Bill glimpses Owen's dark side, and Sally punishes Sophie for her lie.
Leanne is suspicious as Lewis's ill-gotten gains accumulate, while the conman decides to have a final night out with Audrey.
Gail tears a strip off Nick about his treatment of Natasha, while the factory staff return to a brand new Underworld. Elsewhere, Owen has a surprise for Bill and Eileen makes Molly an offer.

Apparently Jack Duckworth isn't going to die in Coronation Street's much publicised tram crash later in the year.
But will take his own life with the help of lady friend Connie after discovering he has terminal cancer - at least according to the News of the World.
Now I'm all for gritty storylines from time to time, but personally I find it all a bit depressing. And if there's one reason why I've always preferred Corrie to 'Enders it's because it is, on the whole, more cheerful.
The News of the World reports that Jack will discover he has terminal cancer, and will ask his lady friend Connie to help him to die before his suffering becomes unbearable.
The article also adds that before he dies, Jack will carry out "secret good deeds" for several of the Street's residents.
From ITV.com: Natasha discovers boyfriend Nick in a secret tryst with Leanne at the factory. The knicker-maker boss claimed he only wanted to talk, but the local hairdresser is less than convinced.
Secretly pregnant, Natasha had hoped to reveal her news and force Nick to finally commit to her. But instead, she ends up confessing to the person she least expected to.
Rachel Leskovac, who plays Natasha, said: "She's backed into a corner, but blown out the water by Leanne. Things are going to get worse!"

7.30pm: Cheryl's panic turns to relief, but tensions rise further between Lloyd and Chris and they come to blows in the Street. Has Lloyd screwed everything up between him and Cheryl? Fiz wants honest answers about John's recent odd behaviour but will he give her any? Audrey's pleased when Gail thaws towards Lewis. Is his smooth-talking escort charm working its magic on Gail too!
8.30pm: An angry Fiz turns up at Charlotte's home demanding to know what's really going on between her and husband John. Meanwhile, Cheryl tells Chris they're finished and crafty Lewis cheats again in the bookies.
Charlotte tells John she cannot face spending the night alone after they jointly destroy the remnants of Colin's life in the woods.
Following a run-in with her husband, Cheryl rushes to Lloyd, who has to apologise for trying to make Owen sack Chris. And on Audrey's return from Greece with Lewis, Gail worries her mother is moving too fast.
Chesney buys a van, and Sophie and Sian head to the festival together.

The smooth-talker persuades her to leave him alone in the shop so he can put a false betting slip in the till. When Deirdre returns she's puzzled to find the door locked and Lewis behind the counter. But he hides his crime by kissing her passionately! Deirdre is shocked but puts her suspicions to one side. Nigel Havers, who plays Lewis, said: "It's one hell of a scam. I'm in awe of him for doing it."

Lloyd comforts Cheryl when she quits her job and a depressed Eileen is left feeling used and abused.
