Celebrity versions of quiz and game shows are always fun to watch and they always donate the money they win to charities. Recently we had Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Sally Whittaker, Michael Starke, Jenni McAlpine and Samia Smith. This week's Fab Photo harkens back to 2000 to a celebrity version of Family Fortunes, pitting Coronation Street (on the left) against Emmerdale (on the right). Not having actually seen the show, I'm hazarding a guess that it was the Rovers vs the Woolpack. We have Geena Gregory and Natalie Barnes in the front with Vinny Sorrell, Norris Cole and Vera Duckworth in the back. Vera was landlady at one time but Norris has no other connection other than being a punter. The Emmerdale characters are (left to right) Marlon Dingle, Viv Hope, Ashley, Betty Eagleton (thanks, Auric), and Bernice (Thanks, Sue for the id!).

SallyRosieSophieWedding.jpgThis week's fab photo takes us back to 2001. Sally was about to marry Danny Hargreaves and the girls are all dolled up to be flower girls. Sophie and Rosie look so young and innocent! Helen Flanagan had started to play Rosie but Sophie was still being portrayed by Emma Woodward. Brooke Vincent has been in the role since 2004. Both girls have grown in to beautiful young women now, but Rosie has been the bane of Sally's life for some time. Sophie has, so far, been relatively trouble-free but that could change.

This week, another night of entertainment in the Rovers. A very young Kevin Webster, Terry Duckworth and Curly Watts form a band to serenade the troops. This will be circa 1985 or thereabouts.

Today's fab photo recalls a drag show that was put on in the Rovers in May 2001. Here we have the Shangri-la group from the garage, Dennis Stringer, Tyrone Dobbs, Kevin Webster and Sam Kingston. Duggie Fergusson is Dolly Parton. Les is a not very good Suzi Quattro. Steve and Vik were meant to be Abba girls and Norris was Eartha Kitt, his idol and he won the night! There are photos of Steve and Vikram and Norris behind the clip below.

In honour of Hayley's imminent return, we're bringing you a fab photo from Roy and Hayley's earlier days. They decided to find some activities they could do together. Life drawing, Spanish lessons and a local theatre group weren't very successful but First Aid seemed to suit them both. Roy, of course, could get a little too involved in the proper ways to use the bandages to the point where Hayley got a little frustrated one evening. We don't see or hear too much of their First Aider activities these days but Hayley was one of the first to help Jason when he tumbled from the scaffolding last year on Corrie.

Since Pantomime season is approaching fast, here's a gallery of very fab photos of Coronation Street pantos and also of some actors photographed in their own panto roles off screen. In the main photo, we know that's Uncle Albert Tatlock on the right but can you guess who the other two characters are? Would you believe it's Alf Roberts and Hilda Ogden? Click on the photo below to see the rest of the gallery.

This is a photo that I took when Jennifer James and her husband Lee Boardman visited Halifax, NS back in 2002. Lee, who played the evil Jez Quigley did a few turns of the room wearing his Jez-leather coat. Funny, how we always refer to him as Evil Jez, isn't it, when we never say Evil Richard Hillman or Evil Tony Gray. Wonder why? But I digress. This photo is fab, not because Lee is playing up as Jez, but because of the look of pure love on Jennifer's face as she watches her husband! Since leaving Corrie, Lee has had quite a few roles in television and films. Jennifer has had a major role in Dalziel and Pascoe and has had a baby boy.

With the murder of Liam Connor filling up Corrie-dom this week, we thought we'd remind you of the last cold blooded psycho killer that terrorized the cobbles of Coronation Street. Richard Hillman tried to convince Audrey she was losing her marbles and when that didn't work, he tried to burn down her house with her in it! Once she was out of arm's reach behind the safe doors of Archie Shuttleworth, he turned to Emily Bishop. He nearly smothered her but wasn't successful then. He also battered his ex-wife Patricia with a spade and buried her under the foundations of the flat conversion. He then had another go at Emily and though he didn't succeed in killing her, he did kill Maxine Peacock, who'd come in the room just as he'd bashed Auntie Em. That wasn't good enough because then suspicions were closing in and he confessed all to his beleagured wife, Gail. He ultimately tried to kill his whole family by driving them into the drink at the canal but everyone got out safely. Except Richard. Fail!

Click through to see photos of the Peacock murder scene and the canal dive. Will Tony meet a similar murky end or will he get caught and put in Strangeways? Murderers don't go unpunished so it's a matter of time until it happens. Will he wreak more havoc before then? Stay tuned!

This week's fab photo shows David Neilson in a very un-Roy Cropper pose, getting down and dirty on a guitar! It was taken in Banbury when he and costar Julie Hesmondhalgh were helping to turn on the town Christmas lights. A man of many talents!

Liam's going to be in a precarious spot tonight when Tony takes him into a cave for a look see. Liam's not too keen on heights these days, not after he took a tumble down a mountain back in January up in the Lake District. He had to be airlifted out as we see here in today's Coronation Street Fab Photo and probably doesn't even like to stand on the top stair let alone a narrow crevice in a cave next to a sheer drop. We know Liam won't come to any harm, because he'll meet his end in a couple of weeks from now (though we don't know just how, yet) but he doesn't know that, does he!

An absolutely fab photo for you today from 1983 when actor Dustin Hoffman visited Manchester and this photo of the lovely Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) was the result! There's is never a day that isn't brightened by a photo of Elsie Tanner!

Today's Fab Photo is brought to you from the mid 1990s just before Maureen Holdsworth married Fred Elliott. You can see Ashley and his sweetie, a much younger and curlier Maxine in the background. They all look so happy, don't they? Within two weeks of the wedding, Maureen buggered off to Germany with Bill Webster and they're now split up. Ash and Max married but she had a one night fling and got pregnant with another man's baby. She then got murdered by Richard Hillman. Ashley is now married to Claire and has a child with her.

What do you call Les Battersby in a suit? The defendant! Ok, he's not wearing a suit in this fab photo but he is on his way to the nick. I believe this was round about the time he was beaten up by Janice's cop boyfriend, Mick but Mick turned the tables on Les and said Les had sucker punched him in an unprovoked jealous anger. Les of course was only defending himself and Emma Watts knew it but kept quiet. This caused marital strife between her and Curly. Les served 6 months and wore a tracker anklet for awhile after, during which time he met Cilla at the Weatherfield Arms where she was working at the time.

This week's fab photo takes us back to the mid 1960s into the corner shop. When Florrie Lindley decided to sell up, she sold the shop to ex-military man, Lionel Petty who seems to be giving Dennis Tanner the business. Florrie had a nervous breakdown in the shop but continued on until her ex-husband returned wanting a reconciliation. She finally said yes and they moved to Canada to start a new life.

Here's a fab photo of a top character, Harry Flagg, aka the Flagg of Convenience. He was a cleaner in the Rovers for awhile and had a fancy for Eileen. She only thought of him as a friend. Harry decided to buy a camper van and travel and he asked Eileen to go with him but she politely declined.

Check this old cast photo from around 1967 or 1968. From left to right behind Ena are: Emily Nugent, Jack Walker, Ken Barlow, Valerie Barlow, Annie Walker, Elsie Tanner, Minnie Caldwell, Len Fairclough, Jenny Sutton, Lucille Hewitt, Maggy Clegg, Les Clegg (The Cleggs had just bought the corner shop and Jenny was set to marry Dennis Tanner in 1968). I believe the show had won an award, which Violet Carson is holding but I'm not sure. Anyone got any insight?

Here's a photo from a celebrity version of Stars in their Eyes from a few years back. This one featured Shobna Gulati as Diana Ross. Doesn't she look Fab? She's also sang on Soapstar Superstar which aired just after she finished on Coronation Street as our Sunita Alahan. I always wonder how Sunita is doing, don't you?

Here's an interesting photo. It shows the Rosamund Street corner of Coronation Street in 1982. You can see how it looked before the health centre and bookies was built. A few years later, we saw the Graffiti club in this location but at this point it was just an old "warehouse". All the shops and the old cafe were supposed to be down the block a little so they would be out of the visual range of the camera. You can see all our Fab Photos over here.

When Jack and Vera took over the pub in the mid 1990s, one of the first things Vera tried to do to save some money was ask Betty to do double duty as cleaner. Well you can imagine how that went down and suddenly, the Duckworth's were not only short a cleaner but short a cook! No hotpot! Jack decided to bring in Fred Elliott's pies instead, as an alternative. Problem is, people started getting sick and Jack blamed Fred's pies. Fred blamed Jack's beer and the pair nearly came to blows, as witnessed by this very fab photo! It was ok in the end, turned out to be a flu bug that was going around!

Today we hark back to the heyday of Mavis Riley. Mavis was a spinster and she was shy and old-fashioned and a bit awkward. She didn't have a very dynamic personality. "Wet dishrag" wouldn't be far from the truth. And yet... Mavis quite often had men flocking to her feet, sometimes two rivals for her affections at the same time! For a while, she kept company with potter Victor Pendlebury and even considered his offer of cohabitation but when she realized he didn't have any permanent committment in mind at the time, she kicked him to the kerb. He resurfaced every now and then and after Derek Wilton was in the picture, Victor would raise Derek's green-eyed monster from within. Here's a photo from a foray in to the hills that Victor and Mavis made. The weather looks dismal and poor Mavis looks like she needs the loo!

Coronation Street actors have been making public appearances pretty much since the beginning. They have opened supermarkets and appeared at charity events, they've been interviewed and written about. When Coronation Street first hit the airwaves, it was a big success and as soon as it was broadcast in other countries, it was *the* program to watch. So popular was it in Australia that the cast was invited down under and they went! (I'm not sure how they managed this when the show was not taped, but went out live, but most likely a few of the cast stayed back in England to hold down the fort.) The cast including these familiar faces (Arthur Leslie (Jack Walker), Doris Speed (Annie Walker) and Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner)), were greeted by thousands of excited fans. There was a grand parade and television interviews. Some of the DVDs available that contain clips have a few interviews and old footage from this visit. Check out this Youtube video as well, of a Royal Gala from 1966.

This one is for our editor, Sue H, who wondered if I could find a photo of Derek Wilton's paper clip car. There was a photo in one of my books but I found a better version of the image on Rex Features. Derek Wilton was so excited to be given a company "executive" car. Mavis was horrified when she saw the bright, lime green car with the garish neon paperclip on top. "Stationery that moves" is the somewhat clever motto on the car, advertising Hawthorne's Stationery.

The Sydney Sandwich. Not a lot more has to be said. Les was suckered in by the two lovely lodgers. His corrupt mind ran away with fantasies but what he got in the end was a sandwich. A really long one. I was hoping it would contain kangaroo meat!

In Canada, we're a month away from David's dive into the drink on the day of Sarah and Jason's wedding. I thought it might be worth having a revisit to the last time David was in a vehicle under water. You remember, the day that Richard Hillman first tried to gas his family in the garage and then drove the van head first into the canal in a last desperate bid to keep them all together for eternity. The underwater shots of the cast were done in a tank or pool, and even little Bethany got her head wet in the water. Helen Worth actually learned how to swim for the scenes! What a trooper! Here's Jack P. Shepherd holding his breath before making it out of the van and helped to the surface by Tommy Harris and Martin.

One of the things I miss on Coronation Street is the community all getting together to put on a play or a variety show. The last time we saw that was the cusp of the Millenium and wasn't it grand fun? The military reenactment was fun and games but not quite the same thing. Here are a couple of photos from a 1940s style variety show the residents put on at Christmas 1972. The first one here shows Annie Walker as Britannia and she definitely did rule the waves of beer over the bar in those days!

Click through to see a photo of Alf Roberts and Ernie Bishop as the Western Brothers who were an old vaudeville act, two cousins whose characters were pompous and blase, uppercrust but disdainful and told hoity toity type jokes. There's also another photo, of Rita Littlewood imitating Marlene Dietrich. Other performers included Bet, Betty and Norma Ford who sang as the Andrews Sisters (see a photo here) and Emily Bishop who attempted to be Carmen Miranda but had trouble with her bananas.
