Tonight's Corrie raised two very fundamental questions about long standing characters.

1. What is John Stape? After years of misadventures, mishaps and murders John Stape now seems a character in serious need of a purpose. He's always veered between charming English teacher, sex pervert, kidnapper, furniture salesman and murderer/ manslaughterer (depending on your point of view) but since his strangely sudden mental breakdown and time institutionalised he has simply reappeared to......nothing. He sits around and looks vague or simpers over baby Hope but doesn't seem to contribute to episodes at all. Without giving to much away, he is soon to be the focus of a major storyline, but for now - who cares?

2. Where does Gail get her money from? Gail hasn't had a job since she was (quite rightly) sacked from the surgery for accessing Natasha's medical files. Before that she spent all her cash propping up husband and unfathomable debt-ower Joe and paying for them to go on expensive breaks to waterside yuppie cabins in the lakes. How does she survive, let alone find a spare grand to bribe Kylie? Never mind the £100 she bunged her last week for a wedding frock. The money she got from first husband Brian's death must surely have gone, second husband Martin can't still owe her much maintenance (if any) and the insurance money from Joe's death never arrived. Unless she is doing some serious moonlighting somewhere in Manchester she should really be in dire straits by now.

Review: Coronation Street Live Episode

Comments (23)

sally and molly.jpgBefore yesterday's live episode I was concerned that some of the cast might fluff their lines or burst out laughing. I needn't have worried. I have to say that the performances were superb, though there was perhaps a little too much screaming for my liking and it I had to turn the brightness up on my TV as the sets have looked so dark all of this week!

Even Dev - who I think is generally a poor actor in my opinion - showed real emotion and tenderness in the hospital scenes with Sunita.

So good in fact I think they should do live episodes more often if it brings out that quality of acting - and passion - in the cast.

Certainly the episode was a real emotional roller coaster, what with Molly's 'death bed' confession to Sally about Kevin being Jack's father, Peter's death bed marriage to Leanne and Fiz giving birth to a very premature, but seemingly healthy, baby girl.

Yes of course it was faintly ridiculous that so many people would be allowed around Peter's bed when he was in intensive care or that Sally would have been allowed to talk to Molly for so long in such a dangerous situation while there were firemen all around her in hard hats. But that's soap operas these days I guess - it's all a far cry from Tony Warren's days when not that much happened in comparison from episode to episode.

So now we know that two people are definitely dead: Ashley Peacock and Molly Dobbs. But who else? The live episode led us to believe that Peter was dead having suffered cardiac arrest with the medics trying to resuscitate him with a defibrillator. But I'm not so sure. I think he may - against all odds - pull through.

Then there's Rita who I was sure would survive but hasn't been found in the wreckage from the tram crash yet. Finally there's Charlotte, bludgeoned in a fit of rage by John Stape but still alive at the moment. Whatever happens, it's going to be a very exciting finale to what I think has been a very good week for Coronation Street and its 50th anniversary celebrations.

No Corrie tonight. There's a little football match between England and Algeria that a few people might be watching. But tune in on Sunday when romance is in the air.

Liz pushes Michelle to make a move on Ciaran during the speed-dating night, but the barmaid fears she has left it too late, and Fiz pleads with John to end his secret double life

Tina and Graeme argue, after he comes to visit instead of going to the Rovers speed dating night. But then he is amazed when she kisses him.

See the video preview here.

7.30pm: What secret is Leanne keeping from Peter? Fiz makes a shocking discovery in Chesney's bedroom - and it's not what you think. Roy makes Hayley a proposal she cannot refuse.
8.30pm: Will a jealous Peter come between Nick and Leanne? Chesney has got to explain his secret cash stash to Fiz. Can Ciaran sell romance at the Rovers?

News of Tony's escape reaches the street, and as Carla reels with shock and fear, an oblivious Sunita invites him into her new home.

Tracy's evidence against Gail looks set to condemn her to a life sentence as the defendant is restrained. And Tina's emotional evidence leaves her stepmother with little hope of a not-guilty verdict. Please no the truth must surely prevail!

Robbie befriends the unwitting Carla and Roy as the day comes to help pop-eyed psycho Tony Gordon escape from jail. The murderer's plan swings into action as he starts a fight and fakes a heart attack while his accomplice (played by James Fleet) lies in wait. Gail's trial begins with Tracy the first prosecution witness, despite Deirdre's pleas that her evil daughter reconsider.

7.30pm: Molly regains consciousness in hospital, where she becomes certain Kevin tried to kill her and the baby. Sian is devastated to see Sophie on her date with Lee, Anna's fears for Gary grow as she learns what punishment he faces for going missing, and Audrey refuses to mend her friendship with Rita.
8.30pm: Kevin is terrified Molly is going to call the police and agrees to her solution. Sophie learns Sian was looking for her and abandons her date to find out the truth about her friend's feelings. Audrey and Rita agree to call a truce over Lewis, and Ken considers the possibility of a loft conversion

7:30pm: Kevin unwittingly puts Tyrone and Molly in danger when he becomes distracted while fixing the brakes on their car. Anna learns the truth about Gary's unexpected visit when an army officer reports him as Awol, Fiz fears the worst when John is late home from teaching, and Lloyd is intrigued to spot Cheryl entering a strip club
8:30pm: Kevin is horrified to realise Tyrone has taken the car and sets off in pursuit. Sisterly advice from Rosie is not enough to stop Sophie's tears when she hears Sian may be reunited with Ryan, Anna is panic-stricken at the thought that Gary is in trouble, and Lloyd is not put off by the discovery of Cheryl's profession.

It's a very dramatic double bill on Corrie tonight as Kevin unwittingly puts Tyrone, Molly and baby in danger by not fixing the brakes of their car properly. When they take the car for a spin (quite literally), he sets off in hot pursuit to warn them.

But is too late? Find out in Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30pm and 8.30pm tonight.

7.30pm: Tyrone's inability to talk about anything other than Molly's baby leads Kevin to snap and threaten to end their partnership. Gary returns home from the Army unexpectedly, Fiz and John's lies threaten to unravel on only his first day back teaching, while Audrey and Natasha organise a pampering session for Lewis and Nick.
8.30pm: Driven to distraction by the thought Molly's baby could be his, Kevin demands she has an abortion. John panics as a new colleague pays him a visit, Kirk's evening goes badly as his date believes she is meeting Jason, and in her rush to leave, she crashes into Gary, while Natasha and Rosie teach Graeme a lesson.

Obviously Coronation Street producers decided to move Friday's lesbian kiss between Sian and Sophie in the hopsophie-710.jpge of boosting ratings by plugging the hell out of the storyline for a few days.

But for regular viewers it is a tad annoying when they mess around with schedules like this. Anyway here's the low down on Sunday's episode... After the row over Ryan reaches a head, the two girls reconcile and Sophie reveals her true feelings. Meanwhile, Rosie has second thoughts about Kyle when Kevin informs her that he might not be exactly who he says he is.

Elsewhere, John takes drastic action in an attempt to save his career. But is he heading for another disaster?

See the gallery below to find out what's happening on the cobbles of Coronation Street next week as the feud between Audrey and Rita over Lewis grows and Sian and Sophie's feelings become more intense.

7:30pm: Tina realises she has to end her relationship with Jason as he plans a romantic evening and another proposal for her. Dev struggles to cope with the twins' presence at the flat and a visit to the zoo only postpones the inevitable crisis, and Becky's worries about Steve's libido give Eileen ammunition for teasing her boss.

Sunita grows frantic as Dev desperately tries to save a trapped Aadi, Sian falls out with Ryan when he confesses he has been asked out by another girl, and Becky is frustrated by Steve's lack of passion

7.30: David steals Nick's car and heads to the Lakes with Graeme to track down the couple who witnessed Gail's fight with Joe on the night he died. Julie is horrified as Eileen thaws toward Jesse, Dev is shocked by how quickly Sunita has got comfortable doing business in the shop, and Sian sets up a double date on her return to Weatherfield. 8.30: David pushes the Kenworthys too far, prompting them to call the police as he and Graeme flee. David vows to take desperate measures when he hears that Mum Gail is likely to spend months on remand. Nosey Norris secretly takes a photo of Lewis kissing Audrey, Rosie plans a date with a footballer (case of art imitating life I think) and Julie pleads Jesse's case with Eileen. But he misinterprets her support and makes a pass at her. Uh oh.

Molly and Tyrone
7.30pm: Kevin worries when Tyrone fails to turn up for work and nervously ventures across the street to see what is wrong. David tries to undermine Tina's belief that Gail murdered Joe, while Carla is impressed by Nick's knowledge of Underworld, and Rita ruffles feathers when she starts work at the hospital charity shop.
8.30pm: Carla realises Nick had inside information about the business and exacts revenge on her new partner and his informant. Gail vows to fit into prison life and ventures out of her cell, Molly orders Kevin to stay away from her as she struggles to come to terms with her pregnancy, and Rita argues with Emily.

In real life, cases like Gail's could take ages to come to court, but in soapland these things happen in an instant. Joe was buried on Monday and Gail is already in court and facing life inside as the judge refuses bail. David's angry as usual, but this time with good cause. When will justice be done!

It's Joe's funeral tonight, but do things go according to plan? And is he going to be given a dignified farewell? Of course not this is Coronation Street, so expect fireworks and recriminations as it all kicks off.
Monday, March 15th, 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
