Sue Johnston joined Coronation Street to be near her grandson

As viewers prepare to see Royle Family star Sue Johnston in her new role as Gloria Price in Coronation Street, she has revealed that she joined the soap, in part, to be near her newborn grandson.

Sue will make her first appearance in the soap this month and told the Sun: "My son lives in Manchester and he's just had my first grandchild. So it made sense to be working where the baby is."

She also spoke about her character, who has already been revealed to be something of a battle axe: "Gloria doesn't endear herself to everyone - she's a real Coronation Street matriarch."
