Sophie Webster has already made what her mother calls a "lifestyle choice" when she decided to become a Christian. How will Sally feel if the Mail is correct, and Sophie becomes the first lesbian character in Coronation Street?
Apparently Sophie is going to dump her boyfriend Ben (we just knew that boy was too perfect to last) and will find herself a girlfriend instead. There's speculation as to whether this will be a new cast member, or her friend Sian (who is played by Sacha Parkinson). The Mail's Corrie mole says that the programme's bosses "are acutely aware that they need more gay characters and that they need to tackle more gay issues."
Kelly and Becky were rumoured to be poised to be the first Corrie lesbians in 2006. In 2007 there was speculation that it could be Violet. It's something that has been on the producers' minds for quite some time, and possibly in Brooke Vincent they believe they've found the actress who could carry the idea forward.

Very upset by this - no longer really watch coronation street as think its a bit ridiculous but was really interested at the Sophie and christianity storyline and thought u did an excellent portrayal of how young people are and do make these decisions. I myself am 23 and am a born-again Christian. So to read that Sophie may now turn to lesbianism is so upsetting as its just making a joke of her Christianity. Fine, so u need more gay representatives. Pick another character, this isn't representative of society, just another attack on people whose faith is the most important part of their life. Will this storyline go ahead? I hope not...
But, Jan, *lots* of Christians are gay, lesbian or bisexual. Wouldn't it be interesting to see Sophie's journey and watach as she reconciles her faith and her sexual orientation? Faith in God is not the same thing as heterosexuality. And, for what it's worth, the God I love has no problem with homosexuality. It's only the religious zealots who do.
Hey Tony,
The bible denounces being gay.
So one can't be gay AND a Christian at the same time......??
'If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them'
'Homosexual acts are an abomination to God'
'If a man has sex with another man, kill them both'.
All taken from the bible.
I have nothing against being gay or being a Christian. In fact I'm an atheist.
But I can't handle hypocrisy.
I agree with Jan. Pick another character, this isn't representative of society, it is just another attack on people who have faith. I became born again in my early 40's and realise that without God in our lives we have nothing. He created us, created our world. Why mock and show christianity to be a joke - by making Sophie turn away from Christ in this way will just fuel the anti-christian campaign who paint it as a "fad" or a "crutch". I am guessing that the original storyline was put in to show that christianity is alive and needed in todays society - please dont spoil a good job
I think that you need to be open to opinions and lets be honest times have a changed eh??? im sure you can get over who does or does not become a lesbian in a soap for GOD's sake!
ooo sorry didn't mean to use the lords name in vain.
I am upset by this to, i believe people facing the facts of being gay might cause quite an upset for them. There is more male gay people and therefore people feel more uncomfortable watching it, otherwise such as myself i don't have anything against homosexuality at all, i just feel very uncomfortable when watching certain scenes that contain sexual nature with woman. I feel that this would be a bad descion for ITV's Coronation street. I have been watching Coronation street for 25+ years now and i feel with this new idea i would not be watching it no more. As well as others i have spoken who find it disgusting and will no longer want to watch the programme. I believe for the last 5 years or so now coronation street has had a major improvement with story lines but i strongly believe having this as a story role will be an extremely bad descision for them..........
here is the good news....... get over yourselves. it is NOT REAL! this is a soap. they are just actors and actresses playing parts. if it offends your delicate little feelings, don't watch!
People need to grow up. There are millions of gay people (and straight people who don't consider homosexuality evil) who are actively Christian yet somehow ignore where the Bible talks against homosexuality. Hell, how many Christians follow the rule that state they can't shave the sides of their face, it's right there in Deuteronomy.
Seriously though I would have like to have seen two teen girls coming to terms with their sexuality, but as with all plots it was leaked and when people complained the Corrie production team didn't go ahead with it. I'm especially annoyed as it would have given my sister a way to bring up her sexuality around our parents, something she's avoided for two years now.
The storyline would have been tense, intriguing and would have actually addressed the homophobic nature of religion and the inescapable reality that you cannot choose your sexuality. It's a real big shame it's not going ahead.
Some people are so closed minded. If a fictional storyline can make you feel this way then maybe your faith isn't as strong as you think it is?
I believe it also says in the bible 'Thou shalt not kill'? Quotes which appear to advocate the killing of others simply because of their homosexuality, from the same book, seems to me a tad confusing - and rather hypocritical in itself. Does it not also say in the Bible that we should not sit in judgment of others?
This is a well written and generally well acted TV programme that attempts to reflect real life. I think it would make for an interesting storyline. I do find it disappointing that homophobia seems to be alive and kicking in what I thought of as a (relatively), civilised society.
Really disappointed that this storyline is not going ahead There are two few representations of lesbians. There are very many of us around- many professional women and if the young girl line had to go- perhaps granada could think about introducing two good older role models. Because of bigoted opinions in my youth, I am now in my 50s, I felt pressurised to conform to what society expected and so wasted years of my life.Seeing the Sophie line would have helped me to realise that I was not alone. Thank goodness for Stonewall and the ability to give young people a more honest answer about sexuality.
@ Phil. The Book of Leviticus decries homosexuality as an abomination. It also decries the eating of shellfish as an abomination - but does not make as disctinction as to which might be the greater abomination. It also recommends that we stone adulterers to death. A similar fate should befall those who wear clothes made of two different fibres (ditch that poly-cotton shirt NOW!). Leviticus is also emphatically Old Testament, and written about 1,000 years before Christ (if you believe in him) was born. Christ's own teachings don't mention homosexuality (that crapology is left to lesser beings and is firmly redolent of illogical secular homophobia). It may be inconvenient for some Christians to accept that there are gays, bisexuals, lesbians and transgendered people among their flock. Unfortunately, real life doesn;t make allowances for that. Coronation Street is to be applauded for exploring a real human issue in this way. I hope the writers will not shy away from the character's struggle with her church's teachings.
Hear, hear, Tony!
Personally, I'm waiting for the man on the flaming pie who John Lennon said gave him the name "The Beatles". I'm offended everytime that someone on the Street eats a pie and am convinced that Ashley will rot in hell. I realize though, (not like some other viewers) that my religious beliefs are mine alone, and it doesn't stop me from enjoying the show. Just kidding....but thank you Phil for your views.
Thank you Tony. It's people like Phil who use snippets from the bible to further their bigoted ideas that lead to more homophobia and non acceptance of people who are different from ourselves. And I can't believe that "atheist" Phil can't stand hypocrisy yet quotes the bible.
Could always be an April Fool, couldn't it? Get everyone watching it on Thursday then give them a massive anti-climax!
why dont you lot get a life you mugs !
