Coronation Street...written by W. Shakespeare?

shakespeare.gifWell, no, of course it isn't, nor could it be but there's a lot of people that reckon that if Shakespeare was alive today, he'd be writing for Corrie. That's because his plays were written in everyday language for the masses. The Daily Mirror and the Royal Shakespeare Company are teaming up to try to find ways for more people to hear Shakespeare on stage and Corrie's Katherine Kelly is on board to help. Rather than catering to the upper class, Shakespeare targeted regular people and his words and storylines reflect that. Katherine says he was "saucy, lewd, dirty stuff" just like Becky Granger!

Although she never thought she'd be an actress, she was exposed to theatre growing up and is a graduate of RADA as well as spending time with the Royal Shakespeare Company. While filming Becky's non-wedding recently, the long days reminded her of the old days where the schedule was equally demanding.

Traditionally, people wouldn't consider Shakespeare and television soaps in the same realm but these days, as Katherine says, "I think there used to be a snobbery about soaps, definitely. But it has all changed." Still, when she says that people take her more seriously when they learn she's worked with the RSC, that says to me that the snobbery is still there. Katherine is a fabulous actress and a great addition to Coronation Street where she's going to reside until at least 2011 which is great news for us fans! I guess Becky's upcoming trouble with the law isn't going to take her off screen!
