I absolutely and faithfully promise that this is the last Corrieblog post we will eke out of the Molly/Tyrone wedding. It's been a slow news week!
Anyway, the filming of the wedding has apparently caused a religious kerfuffle. The church it was filmed in has a large brass cross on the altar (as churches tend to do), but Corrie bosses are quoted as saying that they thought it might be "offensive" to some viewers. They wanted to remove it, but it's screwed down, so instead they covered it up with candles and flowers.
The vicar, Rev. James Milnes, is not amused, and has written in the parish magazine, "Without the Cross there would be no Church. Our saviour opened wide his arms for us on the Cross and yet in 2008-09 the Church is compliant in obscuring it. They wanted to film a wedding in a quintessentially English church and then empty it of the very thing that makes it a church. I want us to say that obscuring the cross is a disgrace." A Corrie spokesperson has said, "Covering up the the cross was an error and we apologise for any upset."
Granada reportedly paid the church £4,600 to film there, and Rev. Milnes hopes to spend the money on a new, silver cross for the altar.

So if he wrote it in the Paris magazine, it must have been written before the show aired on Monday for it to hit the media on Tuesday. He must have been aware of it when they filmed it a month ago so why didn't he just complain about it then? Talk about bolting the door after the horse has got out. I do agree, political correctness gone mad. They're in a church! If they didn't want to offend anyone, go to the registry office
I am sure its just a slight diagreement and is forgotton of by now, corrie always sorts it!
I strongly suspect that obscuring the cross for filming would have been for technical reasons and not for fear of "causing offence" to anybody - were they expecting a contingent of vampires to be watching The Street? You need to be wary of taking these "PC gone mad" reports seriously (and the vicar appears to have had no scruples about hyping it up to score more cash). Meh.
Next time a filming location is rented, what changes can or can not be made will be spelled out in the rental agreement. As Tvor said, if you want a generic setting don't rent a church.
Just a footnote to this - on Radio 4's Today programme this morning a vicar who used to be a TV producer (where did they find her?!) said that she would have covered up the cross, too, because it would have detracted from the composition of the scene, where you want to focus on Molly, Tyrone and the vicar and not on something glittery in the background.
I loved the wedding of Tyrone and Molly on Corie it was brilliant............. I have thought of an idea, as Tyrone's mother hasn't ever shown him much motherly love, and the stealing of the eurostar tickets was the worst lowest thing ever, and as Vera and Jack were like the parents he could oly have wished to have I SUGGEST THAT TYRONE AND MOLLY change their name by deed poll to Mr and Mrs Tyrone and Molly Duckworth. Hey guys what do you think?
