Last week we asked you who was right in the current situation, Molly or Tyrone (Molly has left Tyrone because of his dodgy selling, which he's only been doing to raise funds for their wedding)? Most of you thought there was blame on both sides, a couple of people said Molly was right, no-one said Tyrone was right, but everybody wants them to get back together again quickly because we want them to be a happy couple.
Big question this week, as it's almost the end of the year. All things considered, has it been a good year on Coronation Street? There have been some low points - the baby-swap story, obviously, and the waste of the Mortons, and some useless characters like the Masons and Lauren Wilson. But there have been some fantastic things as well - the continuing brilliance of some of the actors; new characters like Julie, Pam and Graeme; the reappearance of Jed Stone; the unfolding Carla/Liam/Tony/Maria story and the beautiful farewell that Corrie gave to Liz Dawn back in January have all been highlights for me. Overall I'd say yay, and I'm very optimistic about Corrie under Kim Crowther's leadership. But what do you think? Has it been a good Corrie year? Nay for me, I think Corrie has gone and is still going down hill fast. No consistency in the storylines and some rather farfetched stories. The characters are not consistent either. Too many plots repeating themselves i.e. it seems that Tony will turn into another serial killer like Richard Hillman. Sorry a big NAY for me.
NAY NAY NAY NAY i thnk corrie has got very boring
Yay.
I think we had a poor beginning to the year, until Kim Crowther's work hit the screens, and since then it's been fantastic.
Here's to 2009!
Overall Yay but it's not a really strong Yay. They're sailing close to the wind with a lot of continuity stuff ups and unbelieveable storylines but the base of it is still good. It's the storylines like the baby switch that drag on so long and are nothing but whining and full of plot holes. It's Introducing huge numbers of characters and then not doing anything with them, letting them go and then realizing oh wait, maybe we could have.. It's characters disappearing for weeks and months on end with no explanation (aside from obvious maternity leaves). At least they are still giving senior members good storylines though and that's worth watching. Classic soap love triangles, that's worth watching. Fancy weddings and romance, comedy, that all still works. Corrie might not always be good, but it's still better than most of the drek that's out there.
I don't get what's with the nayness against corrie these days. i think it's as fabulous as it's always been. Big YAY from me :)
The first half of the year it was neither Yay or Nay for me.
But since the introduction of the wonderful Graham, the Tony Gordon nastiness and the welcome return of Jed Stone it`s been marvelous.
So a big YAY from me.
Long may it continue
I will say YAY, because I think the second half of the year has really improved. The ratings tell a cautionary story, as they've lost around 1.5-2 million viewers on this time last year. I still think Corrie is holding up much better than Eastenders and Hollyoaks at the moment.
What I like most about Corrie now:
#1 Character interaction. People talk and spend time together even if they aren't sharing a storyline. That doesn't happen on other soaps.
#2 The new characters. With one or two exceptions, every new character brought in this year has helped add to the canvas.
#3 Humor. No other show comes close.
#4 Peter Barlow, who has helped add new dimension to the Barlow clan, and seriously beef up the male side of the show.
What I don't like is the stories which seem so plot-driven, they aren't built up. Steve being in love with Becky came out of nowhere. Tony being a psycho killer came out of nowhere. There are other head-scratchers like Audrey refusing to even consider that Maria was telling the truth about Tony. This after what Audrey went through with no one believing her about Hilman.
If the show puts itself in a position where viewers feel like they're being treated as idiots, then viewers are more likely to lose interest.
So in 2009, less stunts, less plot devices, more characterization and slow, solid pacing.
I think that since Kim Crowther come on the scene, things have improved, with the mention of nostalgia: Irma Barlow's painting, Ken's novel, Rita's photos re emerging and Jed Stone's return. Overall, it's been a good year, mainly for the comedy side more than the drama with contributions from: Roy, Becky, Blanche, Ken, Dev, Rita, Norris, Eileen, Steve and Betty. And Jack's grieving was spot on. Let's see what 2009 has to offer for us!
Yay!
I dont get why people are saying nay....did they not watch last year?!?
Kim Crowther has really turned the show around..although there has been one or two continuity errors here and there
Yay, but it would have been a bigger yay if they'd concentrated on more people rather than the select few throughout the year.
I think corrie has been outstanding the past year, the Platts as always have had great drama and the start of this year I think they hit a real high with Gail being pushed down the stairs, David's endless drama, introduction of Tina, they definitley rule the roost! And as I have always says and Ill continue to say it - Gail is a legend and Helen Worth doesn't get enough praise! She's outstanding, corrie's not corrie without her.
The Michelle / Steve saga was good but its nice to see Steve now having fun and putting the characters in different directions for the future, Maria has had some great stuff this year and Samia Smith who plays her is really brilliant the past few months as it Carla - Alison King the whole Liam thing was great and it was played out well and the story was and still is huge, but fair play to them and of course Liam!
The Mortons had their fair share, and I think they should come back, the websters have also been great and their storylines really gripping us in, and with Peter Barlow back in tow, there's some good stuff going on in that household! Corrie has been good this year and I think it'll be double the drama, comedy, and of course on edge stuff for 2009 from our favorite street! Happy Christmas to all at corrie, and to corrieblog, and great new year!
Though there has been a significant improvement over the last few weeks, overall it's got to be a Nay for me.
Think this year the quality of the show hit an all-time low. Too many meandering long-winded plotlines that in the end went nowhere despite taking a very long time to get there, too many good established characters ignored in favour of newer ones who were just a string of cliches rather than the fully rounded characters we've come to expect. The acting standard on the whole was still very good but the material they were being given was at times shoddy and 4th rate, with too many of the storylines relying on character rather than plot.
And overall the show was guilty of lacking orginality, consistent pace and tension, at times most of the actors have given the appearence that they're sleepwalking through scenes rather than acting in them.
And as Tvor has already said continuity seems to have completley gone out of the window.
I also feel they totally threw away Vera's death. It could and should've been the most moving screen deaths to end all screen deaths, yet I felt the writers couldn't wait to get it out of the way so they could get on with yet more Connor tedium.
Yet as I said at the beginning I think there has been a noticeable upturn in quality lately and just when I had finally written this great show off as a basket-case it seems to be stirring once again.
Graeme, Julie, Pam and Anna Windass (not sure about the rest of the clan yet) look great new characters cut from classic Corrie cloth and Peter has made a very strong return and it looks like his character still has a long way to run and hopefully Jed stays around for a while too.
So whilst I think 2008 was largely mediocre coming on terrible I am hopeful that 2009 will be a lot better.
I also do not get all the negativity around Corrie these days either. My own opinion is that 2008 has been a good year.
We have NEVER had so many great new characters introduced in one year. They have all fitted seamlessly into the show and instantly become fan favourites by not being flung in our faces and by us not being told, with a fan fare of publicity, that they are going to "rock the street" or some other over used cliche. I even like the Windass family, for now.
Dramatic storylines have come and gone, though nothing i feel that will go down in the annalls of history by any means but they have been decent. As much as i love them all, Carla, Tony and Maria have been over used this year and i hope, they get given some 'rest' in the new year and the end of their current storyline, much like the Peacocks did after Log's kidnapping etc.
Michelle's sons has to be one of the worst storylines i have ever seen on the show however. It bored me to tears as does Kym Ryder's character and her son Plank.
Overall though it is a YAY from me.
nay, corrie has stumbled about trying to find something to build on. maybe the writers and directors should look back at some of the storylines and actors and episodes when corrie was good and top show on tv.then it will regain its place.
I think its been 50/50 really-
Vera Duckworth's departure was quite touching, Julie Hesmondhalgh returning as Hayley was a positive, I think there has been too much centred aroung the Connors & Steve McDonald and the Platts- lets hope 2009 sees a decent storylines for the Peacocks, the Croppers, Rita, Jack, Emily and I would love to see a big story centred around Betty Williams. Also Wiki and Kelly Crabtree's stories should be expanded out of the factory.
Something else that also bothers me is the repeat use of Character names!! for example
Eddie Windass- Eddie Yeats
Len Windass- Len Fairclough
Minnie ( Ambers friend) - Minnie Caldwell
apparently theres also a character coming soon called Martha- Martha Longhurst
Come on Writers surely you must be able to think of different Christian names !!!
Nay.
Just too many storylines being dragged out which sorry, bores me. I find it odd how everybody wants the Mortons back after slagging them throughout their entire duration in the show except the last few weeks. Too much farfetched stuff as well, for example, Steve being in love with Becky has come out of absolutely nowhere, with no signs whatsoever beforehand, and even now I just can't see any connection.
To improve, they need to get rid of some of the deadwood. Michelle as she is almost universally unpopular nowadays, can sod off back to Ireland with her son(s), especially since Ryan's actor cannot act to save his life. Claire, when she does come back, I'm hoping is going to become Tony's next victim (please let him get rid of Claire before he leaves). Pam annoys the heck out of me but everybody seems to love her at the minute.
We need more Graeme, more Betty, more of the senior characters, hopefully more of Jed, less Rosie Webster, less Sally please lord, and some humorous storylines involving some of the comedy characters such as Lloyd and Dev who remain underused.
Bogart again. Just a quick one, the writers need to either do something with Kelly or write her out fast, and Sean gets more boring the longer he's in the show, so wouldn't be sad to see him go either.
Yay it's been sooo brilliant recently! BUT The only thing I didn't like was the baby-swap story!- terrible, Kim has turned it around!
No, definately no ... Corrie isn't a patch on EastEnders!
Yay for me. At the start of the year I found it quite boring. But most of it I've loved. Graeme, Pam and Jed are all great characters and have changed the show. I hated the Alex/Ryan thing it was so boring. But I loved the Maria/Carla/Liam thing, thought it was brilliant. I dont get why people are saying nay! This years been quite good!
A big NAY from me. This was the year I finally stopped watching Corrie after 35 years devoted service. I still can't believe that I'm not watching it and occasionally I feel a little guilty and tune in, but all I see are the same old ideas rehashed time and again to fill too many hours in the week. Storylines are becoming more and more ludicrous and I just don't believe it in anymore.
Bogart is totally correct when talking about some characters like Sean. He has become more boring and does little more than twitter and mince in the background these days. The writers seem to do this with characters - overuse them in virtually every storyline and then turn them into background fodder with nothing really exciting to do for months on end. I know that no-one can live an exciting life 24/7, but they manage to keep the older characters interesting with a small storyline or good bit of dialogue, but don't seem to be able to do the same with the younger ones once they've run out of steam.
I'm sad, but there are now more important things in my life and I've moved on.
They did Vera's death well. But..
They ruined Liam.
I still like Carla.
They made Sophie boring, I want the cheeky smart Sophie back.
Carla/Liam was awful.
Jed Stone sucks.
Tina and Graeme are great, Becky is still good as is Blanche.. they turned Steve horrible.
Leanne and Carla is good.
The year has been very good, bar a few dull patches. Give me Norris/Blanche humour.. lots of the Websters, Tina, Becky/Roy, and that's good :D
Oh also, they shouldn't have split up Marcus and Sean, and I'm so pleased Amber is more dominant now!
I also echo the sentiment about Kelly Crabtree. Just what is the point of her? She should have been axed a long time ago.
Yay and Nay. Some very boring stories this year, dragging on too long. Thank goodness for the fast forward button. My favourite writer is Damon Rochefort, and best episode Carla and Tony's wedding. Each scene was a gem. It combined the Corrie humour with a good story, he brought the characters to life and we didn't need graphic sex, violence or bad language.
Some really wonderful comments on this post!!! WE can only hope ITV has a look in now and then.
It a big NAY for me I stop watching Corrie as together after watching it for over 40 years. It stupid storylines did it for me. And as far as I had heard and read it as not improve one bit. So I will not be watching Corrie again in 2009.
the maria and tony story line is know boring corrie take a story and lets it run and run and killa the storyline i got to the stage where i do not care what happens
