And the answer is - the name Windass originates in Yorkshire and Humberside. 161 Windasses appeared on the UK electoral register in 1998, so it's not a common name, but you're most likely to come across a Windass in the York area.
Other notable Windasses include Hull City footballer Dean Windass and playwright Dave Windass.
