It all looks relative

Sometimes, the casting department of Coronation Street gets it so right, it's scary. I've long thought that the little one who plays Amy Barlow, Amber Chadwick who's been playing her since 2006, is the spit of Kate Ford. Now, Peter has brought his son, Simon, home and don't you think that Simon not only looks like Peter but looks like he could also be Tracy Barlow's son as well? Now, I realize that there are no blood ties between Peter and Tracy but heck, those children really do look like they could be related! What do you think, dear readers? And I wonder if they'll bring Amy out of the Corrie Cupboard to play with her ... er... step-cousin?

I know we've had loads of comments in the past as to why these two children are always being carried about. I think the answer lies in the difference in size between the kids and the adults. It's difficult to get the child in the shot along with the adults who are so much bigger. By carrying the little ones, everyone is at head level and the cameras get them all in shot.

I hate that Casting Directors never consider how the person will look with the other "family" members. Peter resembles Dev more the Ken!

  • Kay

I think Simon looks more like Peter than Lucy. Simon is such a little cuteyy! Cilla and Fiz were good choices.

  • Frank

We wouldn't care so much about likeness if the characters were ineresting and well acted. At the moment too many characters are boring and badly-acted, or it's their stories. I wait for this new family with interest, hoping for something far more interesting.

Probably bad direction, but it's so unnecessary.

  • tvor

Ah right, i see what you mean but don't you think that's just inexperience or bad direction?

  • Dilly Daydream

Tvor, by ignorant, I mean that there were at least three occasions last night when people spoke directly to him (requiring an answer) and he totally ignored them. To me, that's ignorant (ie being rude through lack of knowledge of good manners).

  • Tvor

Not sure what sense of the word "ignorant" you mean, Dilly. He's only 5, doesn't seem to be rude, at least he speaks which is more than Amy does !

It's probably just me, but I find Simon a bit creepy and more than a little ignorant.

I think more of the cables are outside the area of the spots where the actors are. I've been on the set and seen a few ready for shooting and the cameras and lights are around the periphery rather than where the actors are. I am sure someone is always there to make sure the kids are careful when they step away from the immediate set area but i think the camera shot thing is more likely the reason. Either everyone is sitting down or the child gets held. Makes it easier for closer shots though far away shots are of course ok.

Regarding young children being held by adults. This was discussed on another site and one poster suggested that it is a matter of safety. We don't see it, but sets have multiple cables and wires on the floor and young children on foot could disrupt shooting or be injured if on the loose. Could that another reason?

Simon definitely doesn't look like Lucy but he's dark like this version of Peter. I think his eyes look like Amy's and Tracey's. Cilla/Fiz, Deirdre/Blanche, Sophie/Kevin all definite lookalikes for sure.

Amy is indeed living with Steve at the Rovers. Barlows' house has Ken and Deirdre upstairs and Blanche downstairs in the front room that we don't usually see. That leaves another room for Peter and Simon together.

I think Rosie gets more like Sally as she gets older. I found the boy playing Simon to be a very strange choice as he looks way too dark to be Lucy's son. I also thought they did well casting Ryan's real dad as they look very like each other.

  • Just WHERE are all these people sleeping in the Barlow household - Ken, Dierdre, Amy (who can't still be upstairs at the Rovers unless she's emulating her mother and playing her tapes till she turns 18) some nights, Peter, Simon and Blanche ...

I suspect No. 1 Coronation Street is actually a Tardis.

I too have always felt that Sophie and Kevin Webster could be related in real life. But I can't see any similarity between Simon and Peter. Simon has curly hair and a wide mouth, something neither Lucy nor Peter have. Although Simon's a little cutie.

  • Nether Nell

I also think the likenesses between Cilla and Fiz, and Blanche and Deirdre are great.

  • oldtimer

No, I don't think Simon looks a bit like either of them and especially nothing like Lucy, but he is a very sweet little chappie.

  • Stella

I always think that Sophie and Kevin Webster could be real family.
