Yay or nay: did "murder week" live up to the hype?

Last week we asked: can Janice be forgiven this time? Old Ena summed up the verdict: "In real life NAY, in soapland YAY. People can do anything to each other and, however bad, it's forgotten in a matter of weeks." There's a wise head under that hairnet.

Unless you were on holiday on Jupiter last week, you'll have spotted it was "murder week" on Coronation Street. Being run over was, perhaps, a poetic end for Liam who'd spent much of his Corrie career driving up and down the cobbles in an unnecessarily noisy car, but did his demise live up to the hype? For me, it was a bit disappointing as I would have liked to see a bigger build-up of tension between Liam and Tony (Liam was more or less oblivious of the evil looks and pointed remarks Tony was aiming at him) and a big showdown between them. On the plus side, I thought it was very dramatic to have the death occurring at the end of the first episode. I was expecting it to come at the end of the second, so it was a shock.

But enough of my waffling - what did you think? Did "murder week" live up to the hype? Click the comments link to have your say and vote yay or nay.

NAY, due IMO to Rob Collier's bad acting and gormless expression (sorry Sue!) coming across as totally bored with the whole thing. This could have been quite nail biting but was a big let down for me.

For me it's massive YAY. Even though I guessed the scenario used for his death come the Wednesday episode, I still enjoyed it all the more. The performances, writing, direction and production were spot on and I couldn't falter a thing. With the odd comments from tabloid critics who do nothing but whinge, it's been given warm reviews from Jaci Stephen (Daily Mail) & Jon Wise (Sunday People)

Old Ena - remember I'm still in mourning! [Sue H]

Overall i'd say Yay but a lukewarm one. Like Ena, i would have liked to have seen more tension between Liam and Tony, let Liam realize that Tony already knew about him and Carla just before the accident, maybe. Liam was going to tell Michelle and then he was going to tell Tony but he kept bottling it yet he never noticed Tony's hateful looks or veiled remarks. Wednesday's ep was a bit slow and filler-ish but Having said that, the end of the week wth the death and reactions etc. was quite good and quite well done.

I don't think it was necessary to do the three endings bits. They might have filmed them but the only one that made sense was the "accident". I do realize they did it more for the publicity than anything else, even though they said it was to keep the press guessing. The paparazzi were at the night shoot because we've seen photos they took, surely they would have seen that ending. The other two were done either on set or somewhere where there was no press cameras. Who really believes photos like that weren't just set up (and they were!)

Yay, but it was something of a let down. Ever since he announced his intention to leave RJC's acting has left something to be desired, as if he was bored and wanted out. Shame, because instead of being sad at his character's demise, I couldn't wait for it to be over with.

I too agree with the comments about maybe it would have been good for Liam to realise and have it out with Tony before the deed happened but overall yay i did. I approached the week with an impending sense of doom and i really got into it. So YAY from me :) I especially found it heart wrenching to watch Carla.

Does anyone know how we (your poor cousins in Canada) are able to see the current episodes from the UK? I have heard that some people here in Canada get them but I'm clueless in Montreal..lol

Nay. I was bored stiff until he actually got killed.

I'll miss Liam though, if only for his lovely hairy chest.

I am disappointed to say NAY. Rob James Collier has been sleep-walking his way through his final few weeks- he couldn't have made it more obvious he wanted to leave then if he'd screamed at the camera 'I'm a non-celebrity get me out of here'. Fans waited a year to hear Liam tell Carla how much loved her and he sounded as if he was ordering fish and chips.

The whole love story was so rushed (after A YEAR of waiting for it to properly kick off!) that there was no sense of momentum about 'Murder Week'- they only got it together the day before, how could we feel truly shocked and saddened?!!

Finally, Carla would not have given Liam up for Maria so that all 4 of them could be miserable together...- and that makes the whole murder so much less credible. She had been gunning for her man for so long- not minding when Maria was pregnant the first time, or had just lost her baby, so why now- when she finally knew it wasn't going to be in vain??

And another thing!! The circumstances of the murder were so implausible- but not in a fun 'Hillman' sort of way way, in an annoying 'oh for goodness sake' way.

Totally turned off by the whole thing. Should've been bloody Michelle Or Maria anyway!!!!

I have to say Yay overall more down to stand out performances from Gray O'Brien, Alison King, Samia Smith and Jane Danson rather than Rob James-Collier i have to say. The actual crash did shock me and i was really moved by Maria's grief at the scene.

Corrie can be dramatic without being overly sensational as it still manages to keep the characters at the fore front rather than just going for shock factor in the hope of winning viewers. I hope it stays this way.

Yay, the only thing that bothered me was the wallpaper in the Rovers. It was the same again in tonigh, wednesdays episode. It's the old wallpaper back again. Can someone explain it or is it just a huge continuity error?

YAY!, Everyone was waiting for it in the week, I had a strong feeling that it would be Hit and Run and was just waiting for it on the friday but it was a MASSIVE Shock when it happened, I thought when Liam started walking back that Tony would follow him, find a car, and run him over!...A BIG SHOCK!

YAY! I loved the acting of Alison King, Rob James-Collier, Samia Smith and Gray O'Brien. They have been doing excellent jobs and it was convincing. Like some of the other people though I would of liked to of seen Liam tell Michelle and Tony when he was going to though but still cant wait for everyone to find out to see what their expressions are. I felt really sorry for Carla when Liam died and she fell to her knees and her last words to him was ''I dont love you'' which I think made it even more upsetting. Upset to see that Rob James-Collier wanted to leave though and had to try and stop myself from crying when he got run over, cant wait for the future episodes with Carla, Tony, Maria and the rest of the Connors should be exciting!
