Inside the mind of Peter Barlow

Comments (14)

29_10_peter-simon.jpg Peter Barlow is due back in Coronation Street next week, along with his super-cute son Simon (played by Alexander Bain), of whom he has custody following the death of Simon's mother, Lucy.

Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter, has been telling Inside Soap about Peter's state of mind when he returns to Weatherfield. "He couldn't argue with Lucy's dying wish, but is struggling to cope, and has come home for some support." He says Peter's self-esteem is very low and he feels he isn't good enough to be Simon's father, so he turns to drink. "He's all over the place, and thinks he hasn't got the tools to look after Simon."

Coming home to Weatherfield brings up other father/son issues for Peter, as Chris explains: "There are lots of issues in Peter and Ken's relationship. It's a complex story about two fathers and a son trying to love each other - but with so much water under the bridge."

Chris is thoroughly enjoying being back on the show and being reunited with some of his old cast-mates. He also loves his young co-star Alex Bain. "He's only six years old but he's really focused."

But what about romance for Peter? Any chance of him teaming up with the recently-widowed Maria? Not for now, at least. "He soon takes a liking to Leanne," Chris says. "There's a lot of flirting, butit looks like his drinking might mess it all up."

Chris has sympathy for his character, whatever happens to him. "I always play Peter thinking that what he's doing, he's doing for the best!" he says.

Please let us have a romance that doesn't fizzle out. There are few couples in corrie street now, and why does anyone attempt to organise a wedding, few take place. What has happened to Ashley and Claire apart from a new front door?

  • Sue

Goldilocks - we're going to be seeing more of Ashley soon when he employs David's old cellmate Graeme to work in the butchers shop http://www.corrieblog.tv/2008/10/new_corrie_butc.html . Julia Haworth is still on maternity leave so we won't be seeing Claire for a while longer. [Sue H]

Just having a closer look, is that the kid from the Rice Krispie's advert!?

I cannot wait to see Peter back. A great character and i hope this time he stays around for a lot longer than previous stints. There are so many ways his character could go and having his son will add an extra dimension.

Simon will be someone for Amy to sit and stare at. ;))) I'm pleased Chris is back, i always liked him and his very flawed Peter Barlow.

  • Nathan

All set up for Shelly to come back.

  • Gwladys Street

Oh no - not another kid.

    I cannot stand it.

  • Tara Campbell

Glad to see him back. I can see a Peter/Tony rivalry in the works like Ken/Mike

We're 10 months behind in Canada, it's just Christmas on the Street here. Such a long wait to see Chris Gascoyne is going to be hard to bear! I'll just have to think of it as something to look forward to. Photos from Corrie Blog will ease the pain.

Good to see Chris back as Peter. As Carl says, both Peter and Leanne need a good lasting romance, so maybe this could be it. (Mind you, I said that about John and Fizz but they decided to bring in the kidnapping!)

  • Carl

Leanne? Goodness. Is she attracted to him because he's the one person in town more self-destructive than she is? If they're going to do this than please can they try to write them as a genuine romance, Leanne desperately needs one.

I'm glad Peter's back, as Chris is a fantastic actor and I also really want him to get up Deirdre's nose.

  • tvor

Not surprised about Leanne. Could see that coming a mile away, especially since he's likely to be buying the betting shop and she'll want her job back.
