Peter Barlow is due back in Coronation Street next week, along with his super-cute son Simon (played by Alexander Bain), of whom he has custody following the death of Simon's mother, Lucy.
Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter, has been telling Inside Soap about Peter's state of mind when he returns to Weatherfield. "He couldn't argue with Lucy's dying wish, but is struggling to cope, and has come home for some support." He says Peter's self-esteem is very low and he feels he isn't good enough to be Simon's father, so he turns to drink. "He's all over the place, and thinks he hasn't got the tools to look after Simon."
Coming home to Weatherfield brings up other father/son issues for Peter, as Chris explains: "There are lots of issues in Peter and Ken's relationship. It's a complex story about two fathers and a son trying to love each other - but with so much water under the bridge."
Chris is thoroughly enjoying being back on the show and being reunited with some of his old cast-mates. He also loves his young co-star Alex Bain. "He's only six years old but he's really focused."
But what about romance for Peter? Any chance of him teaming up with the recently-widowed Maria? Not for now, at least. "He soon takes a liking to Leanne," Chris says. "There's a lot of flirting, butit looks like his drinking might mess it all up."
Chris has sympathy for his character, whatever happens to him. "I always play Peter thinking that what he's doing, he's doing for the best!" he says.
