Monday moan: Liam Connor, love puppet

liam-maria-carla-195.jpgRemember back in the days when Paul Connor was still alive? He was the hard, ruthless one and little brother Liam was the gentler, funnier, more moral Connor brother. It was a good contrast, and Liam's character was developing nicely.

Unfortunately, since then, Liam has been defined solely in terms of his relationship with women. First there was Leanne, who was always one step ahead of him because she was witty and independent. His moral sense and family loyalty meant that he couldn't continue with that relationship once her professional connection to his brother was discovered.

Then along came Maria and Carla. They seem to be two completely different personalities, but they're actually the same personality in reverse. Maria is fluffy on the outside and pretty ruthless inside, while Carla hides her softness inside a hard shell. But they both wanted Liam, and from then on the poor man just became a love puppet, tugged from one side to the next with apparently no will of his own.

Maria has always bundled Liam along in front of her in their relationship. She bought him a dog almost immediately after their first kiss, and when he was in hospital with broken ribs and a punctured lung she took advantage of his vulnerable state to make sure she got an early wedding booked. After that, she turned into Bridezilla and talked about nothing but wedding plans until The Big Day. Carla, meanwhile, wasted no opportunity to try and assert her claim over him, with her vampish outfits and cheeky cheese casseroles.

Rob James-Collier seems just as confused about who Liam really loves as Liam himself. In November he was saying, "Liam thinks that all the angst and mixed feelings over Carla will melt away if he plays happy families with Maria. Of course, he's being totally naive." In February he reckoned it was just lust between Carla and Liam.

I love Rob James-Collier, he's a good actor and obviously fairly easy-on-the-eye. But I'm sick to death of Liam, the human ping pong ball. All it takes is a row with Carla to ping him over to the salon to propose to Maria. All it takes is a phone message from Maria to ping him back into Carla's flat for a night of passion. All it takes is ten minutes of determined pleading from Maria to get him to pack up the (noisy) car and head off for a second honeymoon.

Here's my exit storyline for Liam Connor: he gives up women altogether and decides to become a monk. Then at least he might get to make some decisions on his own. Plus he'd look cute in the robes.

That is a GREAT article- enough said- I agree!

I totally agree with everything you said there! Rob James-Collier is always changing his mind isn't he. Liam is such a lemon but I don't really want him to leave :(

He's been more like a love-muppet! geez.

Is it me or have they changed Liam's character into a gormless halfwit? I seem to recall when he first came into the Street he was a savvy streetwise Manchester market trader made good.

No, it's not you Mrs Robinson - he is a gormless halfwit. That's one of the reasons I can't understand why Carla would even want him. It made me chuckle a few months ago when she said to Leeurm that he was "deep". My backside!!!

Totally agree, the love triangle has been plenty of fun but they've spun the storyline out so long that it's really starting to stretch credulity....
Liam is meant one of the 'good guys' but actually these days all he is doing is messing these two women about something chronic?!
I think Rob did an tv interview last year too where he did say liam was in love with carla, which personally I think seems likely now....
But if this continues to trundle on as is, then I for one am going to get bored stiff by his dithering- what a wet lettuce!!!

Agree with all - Leeum looks and sounds gormless and speaks with a shlushing sound, has he got false teeth or is he trying to sounds cool? He's a good looking man, deserves a better story than this.

agreed- liam used to b a good character but now they've turned him into a bit of a pig who thinks he can mess both women around and get away with it. a shame

Good article there, some interesting points.

I doubt anyone will know what I mean, but Maria vs Carla is like Patricia Roc vs Margaret Lockwood (their characters) all over again. Pat's characters were generally all demure and sweet, and acted innocent, whilst Margaret's were schemers. Maria/Pat and Carla/Margaret also look a lot like each other!

p.s. liam needs to bin off that whiny manipulative crashing bore Maria and pick carla already, so he can get himself some better storylines.....

Theo, there's a phot of Patricia Roc and Margaret Lockwood here http://tinyurl.com/5srhhq and you're right - there's a resemblance! [Sue H]

totally agree liam needs to bin off maria and get with carla before we all get bored!! is it me or is maria,s winey voice got 2 much to bare??

Thanks, Sue. In that film, The Wicked Lady, Margaret steals Pat's fiance! Hmmm!

i agree but carla knew what was going on so it was just maria he was messin around really. I dont like carla aniway i wish it was her leaving not liam.

dont worry youlot, tony gordon should be the right man for the job. anybodyknow when he is back from china?
