Coronation Street episode review, Monday 26 May

They steal milk! They smash bottles! They swing from the bus shelter! It's the Coronation Street hoodies! And a right evil-looking trio they are as well. Roy saw them off after they caused a bit of early-morning mayhem, but he thought that was the end of it, Weatherfield being the peaceful place it is while David Platt's banged up, so he didn't think to warn anyone else. And just as Rita was taking a long lunch and Norris was taking a quick peek into Her Choice magazine in t'Kabin, the hoodies came in, grabbed him and robbed the till. Poor Norris ended up crumpled in a heap of Chupa Chups. The knock-on effect of this was that Claire lost a potential buyer for her house when Jerry came running over to tell her about the incident right in front of the buyers (she's put the house on with an estate agent to spite Sally).

One of these thugs (the big one) turns out to be called Kenzie...

Kayleigh Morton has a bit of a crush on Kenzie, which is why she isn't looking at Chesney, which is why Chesney's been acting so glum recently. Kenzie is Romeo Gallagher to Kayleigh's Juliet Katona in the school play, that timeless story of love and family feuding, Moss Side Story. And Kayleigh and Finlay Morton both know that Kenzie has been up to no good.

Elsewhere, Roger's been cracking on with installing the Barlows' new bathroom. Only he hasn't, because it turns out he's a history bore - sorry, buff - and he and Ken spent the whole day chinnywagging about obscure historical figures and plumbing systems. What I really want to know is whether the avocado bath that was parked in the hallway all episode was the old one coming out or the new one going in.

26_05_joe-tina.jpgWe met Tina's dad, and he's rather lovely. Gail certainly had a twinkle in her eye - could romance be on the cards for Mrs Platt? Go on, she deserves it! She also rang her lovely dad because she's missing him. Tina was sacked from the Pound Shop. Let's try and guess where she ends up working next. The Kabin? The salon? Roy's Rolls? Underworld?

Things I learned from this episode: little Freddie Peacock is very cute, and rather a good actor for a toddler. Daniel Craig's swimming trunks gave Rita ideas. And an ace is the same as a hole-in-one in frisbee golf.

I think the tenuous link to t Kayleigh is the way that these hoodies will be brought to justice.

Obviously Kayleigh and Chesney will argue about dropping them in it with the police or Norris or someone else who cares.

Yes I wondered about that advocado bath as well!

I see from the tabloids that Finlay is going to turn out to be Lloyds son, how original.

Mrs R, I think it's going to work out that Lloyd isn't Finlay's dad, it's just Jerry's ex-wife trying to scam him. [Sue H]

One thing i did have to add was the absoulutely awful acting from Jessica Bardon and Ramone Quinn. I know they are kids, but they are still pro's employed to be convincing. If anything the decision to axe the family is justified on this basis alone.

Why on earth make such a tenuous link to the thugs and Kayleigh, which was totally pointless and (i speculate) which the viewers couldn't give two hoots about? Then to make all that even more puzzling they gave them the cliffhanger ending?! What!? Why?!

One thing that made me chuckle was on Finlay's request to Jerry to have kebabs for dinner, Jerry said that they were to have "real food for tea tonight". Sausage, chips and beans it was then!

It suddenly dawned on me that Moss Side Story is how John Stape returns to the show! Argh!

    Anyway....

I found the episode very tedious tonight. It was a real missed opportunity for some real in your face, tell it how it is, type of storyline. We had the perfect comedic sideline with Blanche's derision over Roger the plumber and the new bathroom suite. Sadly the 'main' storyline of the night just didn't have the desired impact.

Firstly i think it was the writers fault tonight and i don't often say that. The 'hoodies' were given menial scenes which mirrored the meaningless activities these kids often get up to but lacked the realism. It all seemed rather lame for want of a better word. A broken bottle, a threatening walk. Big deal. The robbery itself was also poorly done and again lacked any kind of impact. Not memorable in the slightest.

I was pleasantly surprised to actually discover something about Roger the plumber that we, as the audience, didn't know before. It has only taken the Corrie team over a year (maybe longer) to actually give him more than 5 minutes screen time to do it! Woohoo!

I didn't think the "hoodies" were all that scary. Particularly the chunky one. I'm sure Becky could've sorted them out if she had torn herself away from Jason a bit quicker. And why would hoodies be up and about at 7am?

Kayleigh & Finlay's acting skills were dire.

And who knew Roger was a history buff? It's never been mentioned before and now that we know, why is he going out with a numpty like Janice?
