Monday moan: waiting to turn the Coronation Street corner

BetHildaVera.jpgI'm a bit worried that we're getting too negative on Corrieblog, but here goes...

In a very well-written and obviously heartfelt article, someone called Keith Newbery has written in the Rye & Battle Observer an article called My 50 year love affair is ending now - and the affair he speaks of is with Coronation Street.

He says, "They tried to dress you up in fashionable clothes and subjected you to all the latest social fads, but those who knew you well realised that at heart you remained a glorious creation. You were never the simple, working-class creature some perceived. You were far more subtle and richly-textured; you possessed a depth and humour that evolved naturally from the characters you nurtured and developed."

Keith now feels, however, that his patience has been tested too much and he's ready to turn away from his erstwhile favourite soap permanently.

In last week's Yay or Nay feature, we asked you whether Corrie is in a slump or not, and overwhelmingly you say that it is, and a lot of people seem to be feeling the same as Keith Newbery. One commenter said: "a lot of the reason these story lines (albeit they do verge on near-ridiculousness) are lacking is because they're mostly circling around brand new characters, therefore, lacking a lot of depth. This is why we want our old standbys back (Les and Jim etc). I personally would like to see more of Blanche etc. If they're going to add new characters, they need to mingle their storylines with existing characters for some rapport, otherwise, I may as well be watching some new pilot show on tv."

Keith Newbery agrees with this: "You [Corrie] will do anything for cheap laughs and have forgotten (or ignored) the fact that your humour was at its best when it poured naturally from seasoned performers, like fine wine from old casks. You labour tired storylines like Michelle and Ryan, yet allow a character like Vera Duckworth to pass from our lives in one flimsy episode."

So where does the blame for this lie? Is it particular scriptwriters, is it the producer, is it the pressure of too many episodes or an over-sized cast, of characters appearing and disappearing before we've even got to know them?

Personally, I always have faith that Corrie will get through this low ebb like it always has in the past. The traditions of the show and the talent of the majority of the cast and other people involved are too strong for it not to. I just wish they'd hurry up and turn the corner, before too many people follow Keith Newbery's lead and fall out of love.

"You labour tired storylines like Michelle and Ryan, yet allow a character like Vera Duckworth to pass from our lives in one flimsy episode."

I feel that quote is a tad unfair since Vera's death would have needed to be a low-key (relative to the work-load) affair given the actor's ill-health.

I've been known to drift in and out of love with Corrie too (When Karen went all religious loopy and the Tracey/Charlie thing for instance. And the recent David storyline was trying my patience too!) but it's all cyclical, isn't it? I'm sure it'll get back to where it was.

The trouble I found with the Vera storyline was that, OK yes Liz Dawn is poorly, but what was supposed to be the matter with Vera? She fell down the stairs, but remained in poor health from then on without explanation. Surely the writers could have come up with something to make her passing believable.

I do agree in that it has become sensationalist and tacky. We are now to see Tina become pregnant, not know who the father is, and Gail to help her abort the child.

Also HOW MUCH LONGER is this baby swap story going on for?

We may well have our contrasting views about the duration of the baby swap story, but the reference to "allowing a character like Vera Duckworth to pass from our lives in one flimsy episode" is a cruel, inaccurate (as to be bordering on the bizarre) and throwaway remark that should not be indulged and should not go unchallenged. One? Flimsy?

As well as the episode when she died and the one after, which I think had some great moments (eg: the reactions of Molly, Paul, and Tyrone), we also saw Jack struggling to cope with Vera's death in the following days, and then - later - those powerful funeral scenes.

Loads of people mentioned to me how well played this was. Quite right too, "I Can't Stop Loving You" by Ray Charles at the end of the service shows more than a bit of class.

I think we've all lost faith at times. Personally I find the whole baby swap story tedious and I'm not sure that Michelle Connor derives that much affection from viewers. Does anyone have any sympathy for the character or is she just a perpetual whinge-bag?

Some characters e.g. Dev and his daughter, make brief appearances and in Dev's case, they seem to be increasingly camp.

As for the Vera death episodes, they prove that the Corrie production team still has that magic touch.

Bridge: "Perpetual whinge-bag" ... LOL!!!

Cheerio, Faith

I could no more give up Corrie than I could give up chips, but Keith makes some valid points. My negativity centres around Michelle/Ryan Alex - tired of it, and the knock-on effect is that Steve McDonald is becoming a misery-guts too.
The Mortons....why are they still here?
But most of all, the bookies. No redeeming features whatsoever.To-night's episode, where the pervy older one spoke exclusively to Kelly's cleavage was realy embarrassing, Corrie is so much better than this rubbish.
On a brighter note, I love Corrieblog, long may you continue.

I know she's not in it much these days, but I only watch Corrie now for my beloved Betty Driver. Once she leave - and I've been saying this for a while now - I may never watch again. Sounds dramatic I know, but this slump has been going on for so long, I can't remember the last really good storyline and I'm ready to throw in the towel.

How long have I been watching??? 35 years! So no, I don't give up that easily, but I'm about the give up the fight.
