Gail Platt's tumble and her brilliant stunt double

Coro_Gail_Stairs1.jpgI watch loads of these ITV.com video interviews with Corrie cast members, but I've hardly ever enjoyed one as much as today's with Helen Worth, who plays Gail Platt. She's absolutely lovely - giggly, doesn't take herself at all seriously and obviously loves the job she does.

Trying to explain the Tina abortion storyline she admits, "I didn't quite understand that storyline, but I have to do it. I suppose Gail wanted Tina to have an abortion because she was worried about them being so young, wasn't she? That's the conclusion I came to anyway. And of course David finds out, and the culmination of that is pretty daunting, to say the least."

She laughs (she has a great laugh), "Why would you think David could cope with a baby? He's not stable, is he? You couldn't call David stable could you? I think any mother would worry about David having a baby. He's just too young, and he's been through a lot of trouble, you know."

So why does Gail fall down the stairs?

Helen grins. "I don't think Gail does fall downstairs. I think Gail was pushed downstairs. But of course that takes some finding out - it takes hospitals, comas, God knows what before poor old Gail thinks 'Ah! It might have been David! Yet again.'"

She's full of praise for her stunt double. "The stunt was absolutely unbelievable - I watched her do it. She looked just like me. It's very funny to see someone in your clothes and your wig looking just like you. She was stood at the top of the stairs and she fell backwards. Now you try standing at the top of the stairs with your back to the stairs and wonder how you could fall down, because there's no way I could have done it, and she just fell back. She said it's all about getting your back at the top of the stair before you go. She did a somersault there and she got onto the landing and her feet went through the wall actually with the force of the hit - I presume they'll cut that bit out - then she managed to turn round on the landing and toppled head over heels down to the bottom. It was absolutely extraordinary. Kay Patrick directed it and I watched it with her, and it was just astounding. They only do it once, you know. They're paid to do it once, then they have to renegotiate." Another fit of laughter. "But she didn't need to do it again - it was brilliant."

Helen also loves working with Jack P Shepherd. "I couldn't possibly choose which was my favourite storyline with Jack, because they're all fantastic and they get more and more exciting as they go along. To have watched Jack grow up, really, is just an absolute pleasure and a privelege. I love working with him. I hope we have a good working relationship together, and I wish for many more."

I went to Blackpool a few years back on one of these Coronation Street weekend things (like "An Audience with...." kind of thing, when they talk to the public and then you can meet them individually and have your piccie took with them etc). There were 5 cast members (Rita, Ken, Gail, Fred Elliott and Judy Mallet) and to be honest, although they were all lovely people, Helen Worth was the nicest, most friendly person you could wish to meet. Very natural and not "up herself" at all. And I agree, she does have a great laugh!

It's really nice to hear that. And it shows what a great actress she is, too, when she's being all serious and intense as Gail.

Oh, she's lovely isn't she?
Looks like some GREAT episodes from those clips.
Gosh, my heart nearly stopped!! =O

From interviews on Coronation Street Secrets DVD, Helen Worth does seem like a delightful person. Recall her discussing Gail's various wedding dresses; "didn't like that one, that one was gasly, now that one I did like." followed by that infectious laugh. For such a happy person to protray misery-guts Gail must take talent.
