Yay or nay: Is Corrie in a slump?

Comments (31)

Last week we turned a big, probing eye on Tony Gordon and asked: Is Tony Gordon dangerous? The response was a pretty even split, but even the people who didn't think he was a psycho yet thought it was quite possible he could turn into one, and an anonymous commenter said, "these are the characters that we love, complex, dangerous and unpredictable."

michelle-ryan-alex.jpgNow we're going to broaden our focus and look at Coronation Street as a whole. We're picking up lots of rumblings of dissatisfaction about current Corrie plotlines, scripts and acting. A lot of people are finding the baby-swap plot and the Sean/Violet plot annoying and/or boring, and the rate at which new characters are appearing and disappearing, and more established characters aren't being well used has been commented on. What do you think, Corriebloggers? Is Corrie currently in a slump? Do you find you can miss an episode without being too bothered? Or maybe you totally disagree and you're loving what's currently going on in the Street? Click the comments link, vote yay or nay and share your thoughts.

YAY its in a huge slump. ive become really bored with hearing michelle connor just moan. i dont mind her character, but think she is much better when not crying about one of her sons. alex needs to go a long with a lot of the newer characters that never really took off, the mortons, masons. sean can be a good character if he has a decent story - the baby plot got a bit silly and made me despise him eventually.

give leanne a decent story - she's played by a fantastic actress who can easily pull of emotional and funny stories !

also move in a normal family..... anyone remember how the Harris's were before they were chosen to be torn apart. they were totally believeable, the whole witness protection scheme they were under was even acceptable because they had such depth!! bring back characters like that!

  • Jezza

Yay. Sorry, but for all the reasons mentioned above I don't worry if I miss it now. I've even switched off half way through which I've never done before

  • Elle

    Yay.

I have barely been paying attention to Corrie lately. Because I don't care right now. I don't care what's going on, because it's just not interesting. They need to do something to get out of this, Corrie's has always been my number 1 soap in the past, but I've completely turned over to EastEnders in the last few months. I voted for EE in the soap awards, and I wouldn't have done that a few months ago. But they are doing really well right now, and Corrie just isn't. I think Corrie's been really strong awhile ago, but it's crumbling at the moment. I know it will get back on its feet, but sooner rather later would be good!

  • melba landry

no I love the show do not change a thing about it

  • Rosetta Stone

    Slump ???

    More like the Grand Canyon.

Here in Canada we are nine months behind and my friends and I have been complaining to each other for a long time about Corrie. Granada always prided themselves on the fact that it was very true to life, something that it hasn't been for a long time now.

They need a good shake up. Almost the only time we get a laugh is when Steve/Lloyd/Eileen are in the taxi office. Other than that, it is high drama all the time.

There don't even seem to be much humour in the Norris/Rita department these days. I always loved Mavis and Rita together and, for a time, Norris seemed to fill the void. He is a great character and I believe they could do a lot more with him.

  • NosyWebster

    Yay...

Of course. After agreeing with ALL previous posts...

I think a lot of the reason these story lines (albeit they do verge on near-ridiculousness) are lacking is because they're mostly circling around brand new characters, therefore, lacking a LOT of depth. This is why we want our old standbys back (Les and Jim etc).

I personally would like to see more of Blanche etc. If they're going to add new characters, they need to mingle their storylines with EXISTING characters for some rapport, otherwise, i may as well be watching some new pilot show on tv. Honestly. I have only started watching corrie for about the last 3 years. And already, lately, my interest has been dwindling. I really enjoyed the whole "working-class" nature of the characters as well, now with the introduction of Carla etc, and all of Rosie's new clothes (how does she afford those???) it's starting to lose it's authenticity as well, and possibly, a new viewer.....tsk.

  • Tainted Love

I hate to say it, but YAY my beloved Corrie is in such a slump lately that it will be diffiult to pick up any awards this year.

I hope soon my YAY will be turned into YAYYYY if Corrie improves soon

If Corrie wants to become great again, please please get rid of Sean. His one emotion of looking upset by biting his lip and looking down to the floor is so tedious.

And can we please have just one episode without Michelle Conner? Just one...I don`t ask for much.

  • Dilly Daydream

Evening all. Well now, there you have it...I've whiled away a good few minutes reading all these comments, and very interesting they are too. Now all we need is for the writers / producers / any member of the Powers That Be to READ THEM TOO AND TAKE SOME BLIDDY NOTICE!! Please, before we all die of boredom with the same old characters, same rubbishy storylines, week in, week out.

  • Albert Tatlock&aposs cap

A big YAY! Every time I went away from Tatlock Towers, I would diligently set the video (and now, with the wonders of modern technology, the Sky +) to record my favourite soap. I now find myself missing occasional episodes when I'm away and I don't care about it either. That's unheard of for me. Me, the person who no-one calls between 7.30 - 8pm as they all know I'm in front of the telly!

The writers have a wealth of talent at their disposal and who do they waste it on......? David Pratt and drippy Gail, the ridiculous Mortons, the new bookies (who I'm yet to find a use for) and the most ridiculous storyline about a son being swapped at birth. It's saying something when the highlight of the show is Kelly's knicker parties - and that storyline is unbelievably boring too.

Please, make it stop and make it stop soon, before my ears start bleeding!

  • Andrew

Being in Australia I am only able to keep with recent episodes up via web updates (we are more than a year behind here) but my view is that the show should be re-named 'Conor-nation Street'. Michelle and Liam seem to dominate most story-lines while Street stalwarts - the reason I actually watch and love the show- Betty, Rita, Deirdre, Emily, Blanche, Ken and Audrey are now invisible or given little meaningful to do. The Street should get back to what it does best - a mix of comedy and drama, real life and charasmatic older characters being given something to do! Teenagers and bookies are rife!Reading the updates the past several months - apart from Vera and Jack, nothing has moved me I'm afraid. Just my humble opinion anyhow

  • Brenda

Yay, I am sorry to say, it certainly is in a slump. I've detested the Connors since they first arrived and haven't had a problem saying so. I'm not ashamed to say that they make me angry when they are on and I just can't watch them. The sight of Carla grinding her bottom jaw when speaking is up there with fingernails on a chalkboard. The Mor(t)ons (nod to Dilly D) are half nuts. There are no solid characters in the latest crop. Give someone a believable storyline soon!! The Yays are unanimous, so far.

  • Sophie

Corrie used to be a character-orientated soap, which focussed on real-life characters and their relationships in depth. It was funny, and had a real sense of community that no soap could match. Us as an audience felt a connection with almost all the characters because of the time spent on them.

    And then came Steve Frost.

And with it came so many characters that noboby can stay on screen for more than 2 seconds and only a select few characters have had the oppertunity to build up real depth.

Storylines like David Platt have kept the soap going, but Michelle has been dragging it down with her moaning. Followed by another scene of Violet moaning. And now it's becoming dreary and the script-writers seem to have almost given up...!

The Michelle/Alex/Ryan scenario goes round in circles.... Alex should go but doesnt, again and again and again. The same few lines are said in EVERY EPISODE.

    "have you thought about ryan?"

    "he'll be fine."

    "micheelllle."

And then it's the same with the Violet/Jamie/Sean sage... more circles. more recycled lines.

    "i feel bad, jamie."

    "its for the best."

    "yeah...i know."

    It's time to take action.

Give that awful, whinging Michelle a rest and let us take out our ear-plugs.

Axe all the dead wood and focus on characters...bring back proper REAL personalities. Less transplants. Make it character-based once more.

Take forward David to the next stage. He's a fantastic character and we need to explore his mind even more.

Explore Becky even more and make her 1000-dimensional.

Please, please, put the soap back to where it was!!!

  • Callum

Eastenders has completly out done it this year, Corrie will be snubbed at the soap awards.

  • Eleanor Campbell

I hate the baby-swap story and Michelle Connor constantly sighing. I don't think she's a good enough actress to carry this serious issue off and what a load of rubbish it is anyway. Poor Ryan he doesn't deserve her and she certainly wouldn't win mother of the year. Steve should have let her move out and hopefully she would have left the show along with Alex. Who would want Alex for a son? Previous episode Steve said I can see you are bonding with him - where did that come from? What a load of rubbish.

The other story line with Violet ande Jamie is just completely unbelievable. She hasn't stopped moaning since finding out she was pregnant. Don't even know where this "I want a baby" came from cos. Get rid of them both and hopefully they won't be back.

Where's all the good laughs there used to be in the Street, turning into Eastenders with all the sour faces.

Needs a good turnaround and fire all the writers.

  • R McCartney

I find the current story lines so weak and unbelievable. The whole thing with michelle is ridiculous, who would desert a member of the family after 16 years to welcome into into their home a complete stranger. It would take months of getting to know the person and building up a union of trust between the two. If I had a "stranger" in my house who performed a personal lock in, I would have called the police without a second blink. I feel that there hasn't been a good plot since Richard Hillman. Its about time ITV pulled out the stops and produced something that was fun, believable and unmissable.

  • Sue B

According to the actor who plays the bookie's son (so memorable, I've forgotten his name) he's going to be involved in some "stuff" soon. Presumably after they've done the Alex story to death. What is the matter with Corrie these days?

  • Paul

As much as it kills me to say so, I do think we're in a transition period of a slump. The writing is still top notch but the stories aren't ringing true. I do like the way the baby swap storyline has turned a corner to show the emotional side of the children concerned and not just focussed on Michelle but I can't wait till it's over.

There are too many characters that are doing absolutely nothing and it's a crying shame.

I dread to think how Kim Crowther is feeling at the moment with such a weight on her shoulders.

  • Deb

Corrie has lost it's way as far as I'm concerned. Storylines of late are too unrealistic and go on way tooooooooooooo long..lol. We are behind you viewers in the U.K. but after reading your blogs I am not looking forward to the upcoming plotlines. Becoming to "American soap style" is there problem. And for heaven sakes could they put in some humour once in awhile..is that too much to ask..lol.

  • Scarface

On an earlier comment, I think it's actually years since Dev had a storyline. All he ever does is appear now and then for an odd comment or two.

  • seanie

Yay. I agree with Dilly, Michelle needs to knock her head against her wall. I don't think it's anybody's acting, I just think the storyline has dragged on long enough and people have liked it. It didn't really need to drag on that long. The reason people don't like the corrie writing is cause the loveable characters aren't in it anymore. We haven't seen Rita, Betty or Emily in ages. I am getting sick of these rogues and the stupid familys, the Mortons. Dan and Harry are OK but there's enough rogues around the place. If Alex turns bad, there is a spin-off storyline from the baby swap storyline. I'd love to ring the Corrie writers and take the baby-swap storyline out of the series because it's going to lose viewers and I think most of the Corrieblogger's hate the storyline.

  • shinychris

I think Corrie is going through a slump. The whole baby swap thing is ridiculous and some of the characters like Jamie and Violet are less than compelling somehow. We simply don't care enough about them. I think though you can't expect high-octane action the whole time. The problem for me is that its lost some of its warmth and humour in the chase for silly ill thought-out and executed storylines.

  • Trish

Agree with Tara's comment about it becoming the Michelle Connor show. She seems to have been in nearly every scene for weeks now. Last year it was the Sean Tully show. Whats happened to Doreen, and where are George and Ivor whom I thought bought some laughter back to the programme. Its about time they found some new scriptwriters.

  • Tara Campbell

    Yay I forgot ^^^

  • Tara Campbell

Its really becoming the Michelle Connor show

Anyone see Ghost Hunting With? I couldn't tell if it was Kym or Michelle. The waterworks were appalling

  • Nurse Florence Ganderpoke

Yay, and it's a shame. The humour that Corrie is famous for seems to be in very short supply. The baby swap storyline is getting on my wick, we've not seen the likes of Deidre, Kirk, Chesney, Ashley or Clare for yonks (least of all Josh - who is a great little actor - can teach Ry-an & Al-ix a thing or two!) All we get at the moment is whining, selfish Michelle and her whining, selfish, wooden sons - according to DS, she's been in EVERY episode this year. GRRR! Dev hasn't had a storyline in months, and what could be a great double act between Becky & Ken in the cafe has been put on the back burner. Wiki is a great character that's underused too. Wake up Corrie!

  • Lee

I am currently watching the old Corrie DVD's and I'll tell you; I prefer watching them to the current shows. The people were real, the relationships were real, their stories were real. I certainly hope the powers that be would consider our opinions.

  • abbyk

I thought it was the American writers who were on strike.

Pretty sad when changing the wallpaper is the most compelling story (Ian Reddington has been fun to watch, and I'm not a Vernon fan). Gail and Michelle are stupid stupid mommies -- oh sure honey, here's some money so you can kick me out of my house again, it's okay dearest we found Amy let me give you a big cuddle and a treat. Sean is a stupid stupid friend and Dan Mason is stupider than a brick -- nuf said.

Stop writing to the lowest common denominator -- let characters act smart. Clever people reacting intelligently make better stories. Just imagine Blanche, Eileen, Kelly or Rita putting up with David, Alex or Sean's behavior.

  • Jeffrey Lewis

I have watched Corrie ever since I can remember but I am finding it hard now to watch. Its storylines are total rubbish at the moment and have been for a while. Most of the time I have Corrie on I read rather than view it because it is boring. The baby swap storyline I can't see where this is going and as been on far too long. I am sick to death of having David Pratt storylines. Many of his storylines are not research eg when he went into the canal hardly anything was heard of if a person in real life was to go this he would possibly get medical treatment or even section under the menth health not David. He has lied in court in a murder trail, he nearly killed his niece and so on.

I wish the writers would give more of the storylines to the older members of cast I am sick of the stories with some of the younger cast some of whom cannot carry these storylines. I would like to see Les and Jim back in the street or someone similar. And where as all the comedy gone? We need that back. We need to get rid of some of the current cast because frankly the are rubbish.

  • Mags

Yay, I think the Violet and Jamie plot is really boring, the baby swap story is ridiculous and not true to life at all. Steve should throw Michelle and Alex out. Michelle has become the most annoying person ever. Too many characters are leaving too soon, the plots are not well thought out at all anymore. Corrie is losing it.

  • mark

well I wrote a very long post giving reasons but it hasnt posted for some reason and I cant be bothered to re type it so I will just say a huge YAY!!!!!!!! At the moment it is the worst I can ever remember it being, even worse than Ashley/Claire/Casey and thats saying something!

  • Dilly Daydream

Yay. I want to smack Michelle upside the head, she's so terminally annoying. Steve should have taken her up on her offer to move out. Also severely grating on me are Violet & Jamie, but at least their imminent departure is something to look forward to. Biggest mistake the "powers that be" ever made was bringing in the Connors and also the Mor(t)ons (but at least their parts are dwindling). Please give more meaty storylines to characters like Rita & Liz (bring back Jim!)
