Monday Moan: the "white stiletto" scene

stilettoS.jpgIn Tvor's excellent piece Coronation Street gets it right, she said, "we complain sometimes [about Corrie] because we know how good it can be and we're spoiled," and she's so right.

It's in that context that I have to set today's Monday Moan. It's about a thread which ran through the episode on Friday 25 January, which seemed so boring at the time that I barely mentioned it in my episode review, but people were picking it out in the comments, so I thought I'd come back to it now.

Basically, all that happened (for those of you who won't see it for another eight months, or who missed it) was that Dan and Harry Mason discussed a pair of white stilettos that Harry found in Dan's room. It turned out that these belonged to an old girlfriend of Dan's, with whom he'd had such a fun time (I'm paraphrasing a lot here!) that he now does his best to persuade any current girlfriend to wear them for bed. Later on...

it turned out that the original owner of the shoes was a married woman of Harry's acquaintance, which made Harry angry, but by then to be honest I wasn't really listening. The whole conversation, which went on over the course of several scenes, was sleazy, unfunny, and bordering on misogynistic.

Several people were upset by the tone and content of the conversation between Harry and Dan. Corrieblog reader Steve was watching with his two young daughters and felt that the scenes were completely inappropriate for a 7.30 time slot, and were completely gratuitous, unlike the Liam and Carla scenes, which were tastefully done and were in the context of an ongoing story. I have to agree with Steve. My ten year-old daughter usually watches Corrie with me, but I was quite pleased she was out on Friday night.

I have to say I found those scenes some of the most pointless, boring, badly written scenes I have ever watched on Corrie. All they did was confirm that these new characters dont fit into the show especially as the scenes also involved a Morton! Its rather worrying that the episodes were written by the husband of the newly appointed producer I hope this isnt a sign of things to come. Corrie really is a strange mixture at the moment - either very good (Vera/Jack - Liam/Carla) or very bad (Ryan/Michelle - Bookies/Mortons/Lauren), it needs to improve its writing and storylines. Bring back Daran Little and make him head writer!

I would absolutely love to see Daran Little back at Corrie.

Absolutely appalling, boring, tacky and totally totally pointless. In fact I am going to complain about this rubbish to dutyoffice@itv.com
and suggest you all do too!

I wasn't offended, I just thought it was naff and boring and went on for far longer than the 5 seconds that it should have, if at all

Boring!!!!! It came out of nowhere. BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!x100000

The "white stiletto" scenes were a miserably unfunny, uninteresting waste of precious Corrie time. I eagerly await any news of these characters leaving the show. What exactly are they there to do? I also don't care for the way other characters have been adjusted to make way for them. How long have Blanche (of all people) and Lloyd been big gamblers? Wouldn't it make more sense to put Jack in the betting shop when needed? The Masons should be shunted off as quickly as possible, possibly taking Lauren with them. Perhaps they could join the cast of The Bill where they'd be free to overact bad dialogue without seeming out of place.

It didn't offend me, I just thought it was creepy and weird. I don't buy Dan's explanation either, I think he's got bodies buried all over the Moors sans shoes

These two characters are more pointless than the Morton family, who are beginning to be interesting by comparison.
