Hilda Ogden's back in fashion!

AmyWinehouseS.jpgCoronation Street legend Hilda Ogden was never seen as a style guru in her heyday, but her trademark headscarf could be making a comeback.

Singer Amy Winehouse was seen recently sporting a very similar look (with added tattoos), and Jean Alexander, who played Hilda, couldn't be more pleased. "I’m delighted the headscarf is having a revival," she writes in The Sun, adding sensibly, "It is so practical and can hide a multitude of sins." She recalls her youth in Liverpool, where factory girls would hide their curlers under a headscarf: "They had the curlers in place in case they got asked out on a date, so they’d be ready for a night out after the shift. They could just take off the headscarf, remove the curlers and shake down their hair."

Jean isn't familiar with Amy Winehouse's work, and can't really relate to her boozing, drug-taking lifestyle. "We were brought up with rationing and we never had a lot of money. High-living pop stars just didn’t happen in those times," she says, and owns up to her own vice: "I admit I still smoke cigarettes, but I’ve cut down." She isn't too worried about the health implications, as she points out: "Doris Speed, who played Rovers’ landlady Annie Walker, smoked all her life and she died aged 95 in a care home. She’d just had a cup of tea, had a cigarette in one hand and her book on her knee when the manager found her dead."

I would of never thought of a hair curler as a fashion item more as a 'thing' you put in your hair when you want it curled.
