Corrie cast pay tribute to our Vera Duckworth

You know that a character is finally leaving Coronation Street these days when they get a page all to themselves in the ITV website's departures lounge. Today we find Liz Dawn there, suitcases packed, ready to head off to retirement in her Spanish villa.

There's a video of Vera's best bits, with comments from Liz Dawn and some of her co-stars. And another video is full of tributes from Corrie cast members. "Vera epitomises what the Street is," says Bill Roache, "Someone who you care about, someone who's struggling against life and always failing, always getting it wrong but never giving up hope. The sort of character you identify with - you cry with them, laugh with them." He says this is down to the skill of Liz Dawn, and is grateful that, although Corrie is losing Vera, her friends aren't losing Liz and will still see her.

Tom Hudson says they should have a plaque put on the wall of Granada Studios in her honour because she's such a legend. He cites his favourite scene as being the recent one with the vibrating chair, and says he doesn't know how they didn't all laugh throughout the scene - and in the clip you can see him and Vicky Binns having a real struggle not to.

Alan Halsall says that Liz has made him laugh so many times. "You don't even realise how funny you are, he says, "Some of the stuff you come out with is just fantastic and I'm going to miss all those times, and I'm going to miss you... a lot."

There's loads more, including clips of classic scenes, such as Vera defending her new stone cladding from Percy Sugden's verbal attack, Vera's distress when Terry sells his son Tommy, and the brilliant one where Vera tricks Jack into meeting her for a blind date at t'Rovers.
