Double episode written by David Lane and Julie Jones
Ryan's 16th birthday, and the last thing he was expecting was a present from his dad. That would be Nick, the dad he never knew existed previously. Ryan's been well brought up (by someone who isn't biologically his mum) and knew that when a strange man approaches you proffering gifts, you should call the police. "Ryan, I'm your father," Nick said. Naturally this came as something of a shock, and Ryan went home to his 16th birthday party, and told everyone what the strange man had said. Then he saw from Michelle's and Steve's reactions that maybe the man wasn't a nutter after all.
Michelle attempted to explain, Ryan rushed out, and he ended up...
at Nick's house (Nick had given him the address), where Alex (the boy who is really Michelle's son) confronted him outside his own 16th birthday party. Ryan was horrified to see that Alex looked just like Michelle's late partner, Dean. I'm pretty horrified too, because if Dean looked like that, all I can say is that Michelle could have done better. Anyway, there was a touching scene later on in which Michelle attempted to reassure Ryan that nothing had changed between them - he would always be her son. He's not quite convinced, though, and I can't say I blame him.
Meanwhile, Carla was continuing her charm offensive with Liam. Like a moth to a flame, he was drawn to her, hobbling over the cobbles - which looked like a very risky pastime - to t'factory. Tony Gordon is beginning to get jealous of the bond between Liam and Carla, and Maria is deeply aggravated. Maria is making herself less marriage-worthy by the minute, though: she's gone into full nag-mode, getting Liam to do guest lists and so on, and I feel this will be her undoing. She's emasculating him, now he's physically vulnerable. Whereas Carla is approaching him still very much as a man. She's not daft, that Carla. And she has a way with words, calling Maria a "Pregnant airhead. Sorry - 'airdresser."
Sophie and Rosie got into a fight in the school playground. We didn't get to see it, but Sally was called to the school to bring them home, and Rita gave the girls a piece of her mind. Poor sally was at the end of her tether, having just visited Kevin in t'prison. Norris didn't help. He tried to sell Sally some cigarettes "or 'snout' as I believe it's called," he said, for Kevin to exchange for favours in prison, and wondered if Kevin might be having to fend off "some man mountain trying to make Kevin his significant other."
Molly persuaded Tyrone that it would make financial sense to keep Slimy Paul on as a lodger after they buy the Duckworth residence. Dev cautioned them against getting into mortgage debt. "Property PORN, it causes so much TROU-BLE!" he yodelled, before giving Violet and Jamie some ideas for baby names. "Money Pit? Mummy's Little Overdraft?" These were almost as good as Lauren's "Bernard Matthew - after the turkey baster."
Sean wasn't pleased to hear that Jamie and Violet were thinking of baby names without his input. He'd like "Sean" to be in there somewhere. But that's Sean for you.

After last Fridays double bill I thought things were improving slightly but last nights episodes were ruined by some of the worst "acting" Ive ever seen on Corrie. Any tension or emotion was totally lost by the appalling woodeness of the actor who plays Ryan. He just stood there with his hands by his side saying his lines as if he was reading off an autoqueue, but even he looked good compared to the "actress" playing Violets sister Lauren. How on earth did she get past a first audition, she is trully appalling!
Mark, I know what you mean, though I thought Ben Thompson showed the occasional spark of decent acting yesterday. I have to disagree with you about Lauren, though - I really like her! The actor I'm finding most irritating at the moment is Samia Smith. It's her voice - it hovers between a yodel and a whine.
Cannot stand Lauren with her over exaggerated mannerisms, what on earth is the point of her, apart from causing trouble - very droll.
I am totally fed up with this baby swap storyline and Michelle and her stupid behaviour and constant hand wringing. And would the Webster girls really listen to old Rita?
The only good thing at the moment is David and Tina and Carla (and the factory girls of course!)
What do you think of corrie storylines at moment, do you think they are good, bad or average. Because in May its the British Soap Awards again. Corrie did really well last year winning 7 awards, do you think it do well this year or do you think its do bad instead. corrie had great storylines last with tracy barlow murdering charlie stubbs and the courtroom scenes. Tell me your opinion about this.
Luaren Wilson is now my second Coronation Street favourite character.
Seanie - I'm glad you like Lauren, too. At least she has two fans! I'm looking forward to seeing more from her, as she's not really been given anything to do yet.
can't wait for Carla and Liam to get together. Maria is just annoying me now. i wish she would find someone she deserves coz she needs to be loved by someone who doesn't love/fancy someone else
I thought the acting of Ben Thompson was truly dire. The whole show was just ruined. Since he started on the show with his character i have never found him convincing in the slightest and yesterday just encapsulated everything that is poor about his acting ability. Shocking.
Kym Ryder did a great job, i was very impressed. Lets just hope that this leads to Ben Thompson's character being written out of the show, because i can't take much more of this.
This storyline is also really starting to grate. It seems to be turning into a saga of the Claire/Casey (Log) and Shelley/Charlie in the bedroom saga's.
I don't like any of the storylines at the moment. The Carla/Maria/Liam thing is getting on my nerves, why would they suddenly start fancying each other after all these years. Can't see the point of Carla being in Coronation Street at all anyway. I don't see the point of the baby switch story. Why again after 16 years upset two families. The Rosie/Mr Spate story is also boring. It seems they've changed Rosie's character to suit the story. The script writers are trying too hard, they need to think about their storylines a bit more, at the moment they are just trying to win viewing figures I think.
