On this day in Corrie history - the Wilton jiltin'

MavisDerek.jpg 26 September 1984 saw one of the great Coronation Street weddings that never was - a double jilting!

Mavis Riley was engaged to Derek Wilton, but decided at the last minute that she couldn't go through with the nuptials. This was partly because she was also being romanced by Victor Pendlebury, and felt that Derek should have been more assertive in seeing him off! She despatched Rita to the church to give Derek the bad news - but he'd failed to turn up as well. What could be more humiliating for a bride than for her prospective groom not to even know he's been jilted?

Four long years passed, which must have felt longer for Derek because he married the very scary Angela Hawthorne in the meantime, until Mavis and Derek finally got married in 1988. Their marriage was mostly happy - a bit like Roy and Hayley, they were the slightly oddball couple whose social awkwardness made them cling together more tightly.

Derek died in 1997 in a road rage incident which saw him collapse with a heart attack in his comapny car - which was bright green (if I remember correctly) and featured a huge paperclip on the roof!

Mavis left the Street to run a B&B in Cartmel in the Lake District, where Rita occasionally visits her.

I loved Derek and Mavis together. What a pity that someone was so shortsighted to kill him off. I don't blame Mavis for leaving.

As much as i really disliked Derek, i also loved Mavis and they really were a good double act!

Ah, the Wiltons, what a pair! I do wish Mavis would pop back once in a while.
