Corrie A-Z: W is for Wheelchair

jimWheelie.jpgCoronation Street doesn't feature characters with disabilities too often though not not ago we met Freda, Emily's hearing impaired niece, who was featured in the storyline where Emily met her husband's murderer, Ed Jackson. We've had a few characters take to wheelchairs over the years, most of them as a temporary measure to recover from an injury. The first time we saw one was after a coach accident from the Lake district. Ray Langton was injured and spent a few months wheeling over the cobbles. Jim McDonald took a bad fall off some scaffolding into a skip and was in a wheelie for a few months as well. Once he pulled himself out of a depression with the help of Maud Grimes, and got some physical therapy, he was soon back on his feet.

maudGrimes.jpgnorris_rita_wheelchair_1.jpg Speaking of Maud Grimes, she was featured as a full time wheelchair user but also portrayed as having a very full life, working in the shop and busy taking in social activities. I am not sure if we ever learned what it was exactly that caused her to lose the use of her legs though we do know she wasn't always in it. More recently we saw Norris in one for a few days after an accident in the cafe.

Awww... Maud Grimes. She was lovely!

Jim did not take a fall off the scaffolding. He was pushed by Steve and Steve got away with it.
