William Roache agrees Coronation Street had to change with the times

billroache.jpgExcellent interview with Willam Roache, Coronation Street's Ken Barlow (as if you didn't know!) in today's Daily Record. He starts off commenting on the departure of Liz Dawn, breaking news this week that we've been blogging extensively. Liz has taken her health into consideration and is leaving the show later this year rather than cause delays on set when she's not well. (This has happened in the past, when Bryan Mosley, who played Alf Roberts, was not well. The producers had to suggest that he retire because they really did worry about his health. Six weeks after he retired, Bryan died.) William remarks on many other current Corrie issues like the influx of more "sex on the Street", saying that viewers are more savvy these days and they had to change to keep up, but thinks Corrie finds a good balance between being too old fashioned and too modern. What do you think? Is the balance between the gripping and sensational and the everyday little passages a good mix? Or do you wonder what they're doing to your Corrie!

Maybe I'm getting old but I think there's too much sex. Sorry, I know it sells but I'd like to see a few couples on the street that "only have eyes for each other". It may be boring but I think having the odd couple "in it for the long haul" does reflect society.
And my favourite character is Blanche (who never seems to have sex at all-just good one-liners)

I honestly do think that there is a good mix between the young and old on the Street these days. Moved on from the past when it was dominated by older characters.

The balance between gripping and sensational stories and everyday passages is pressently slanted towards the sensational I'd say. Everyday life can be gripping too - it is what we all have - given the personalities protrayed and clever dialoge, everyday scenes can be more entertaining than the big sensational stories that stretch
reality.

The Street has always had sex, it was just behind closed doors. Nothing is left to the imagination anymore and that is a shame.

Even the characters who we would now think are the lynchpins of the Street (Blanche, Rita, Jack & Vera) have all had their moments when they were younger! Blanche was a right goer in her time!

I think there is a very good balance between humour and seriousness (sorry I'm tired, I know seriousness isn't a word) especially when you get the better characters like Eileen, Danny and Norris who are very funny but definitely aren't there just for the comedy performance.
