Does anyone like the Morton family?

Comments (17)

the_mortons_1.jpgI think that it's a fair conclusion to draw - no one really likes the Morton clan. New Coronation Street families sometimes take a while to settle in, (heck, in 1964 the Ogden family were hated by the viewers and look where Hilda ended up!) but the Mortons don't seem to be enjoying any sort of honeymoon period. So why don't I like them? [Ben]

For starters there are too many of them, all milling around that tiny house. Another point of derision is because I think that they are a very 'safe' Coronation Street family. All of the characters fit nicely into the little box marked 'Corrie character', yet they are too stereotypically Corrie to be of interest to me. I think that in creating the family, the Corrie bigwigs could have been far more original and presented us with something different, something outside of this 'Corrie character box'.

Tony Warren used to stand in bus queues or chat to old men in pubs. If the writing team left their offices and went onto the streets of Salford for just one afternoon they could find a massive, massive array of fantastic character ideas, but somehow, I don't think they ever will.

Why don't Corrieblog readers like them? What has gone wrong? Should we instantly like a new character or family? So many questions!

Can't stand any of them. Get rid of them all.

They were never going to work. You can't just drop in a load of new characters and expect viewers to care. Melanie is the only one I'm vaguely interested in. Nothing against the actors but the characters just don't do it for me and the thought that they'd all be living in that tiny house is ridiculous. Especially when they're supposed to have a bit of money behind them. I expect the next producer will just get rid.

The point made earlier about the Connors was a good one. We got to know each character on their own first and then see them develop nicely as a family unit.

I like them but dont see the point of Finlay at all.

The trouble is that whilst they've been in a lot since they came they've had no actual storyline and so all we know about them is that there's a lot of them, they own a kebab shop, are noisy and a little bit dodgy. There's been no characther exploration nor any hint of a backstory, they're just cardboard cut-outs straight from central casting looking for some meaning at the moment.

Also you're left with the impression the producers are holding an on-screen audition for the Mortons at the moment and are just testing them out before dumping those who don't work out. Eventually I daresay they'll be down to just Mel, Jerry and maybe one other and then I think we'll start seeing them emerge and become decent characters, Mel I think in particulair has the potential to be a very strong character.

And finally, what was the point of introducing Finlay?? They made such a big fuss of going to get him but since then he's been hardly mentioned nor seen, it all seems a little pointless. There is probably a good storyline there but they seem to be neglecting it.

I think they will all be gone by next year. I miss the Harris family especially Tommy.

I agree with Sophie, my favourites are Jerry, Mel and Jodie. I think they ll have potential but I think Darrlyy will just turn out to be another David Platt.

We hardly ever see Kayleigh, Finlay or Wilf so I'm not betting that they'll get any storylines.

For some reason, people seem to think that child actors 'need more of a chance.' I disagree with this. I think you either have it or you don't and the actress who plays Kayleigh certainly doesn't, she simply can't act.

Sorry if I'm sounding brutal, but it's true.

So yeah, keep Jerry, Jodie and Mel, get rid of the rest.

Such a shame Jodie is leaving, I think she would have real potential.

I do like the Mortons (some of them, anyway)

But I agree, there were too many of them to take in

I'm not sorry to hear that Jodie is going (nothing against the actress)

The grandad is a bit of a waste of space and soooo creepy

But I like Jerry, Mel and Darryl

aww - I like them.. give them a chance - they've not been in it too long - I prefer them over the Batersbys!

  • tvor

You know what? there are nearly as many posts about how we do or don't like the Mortons as there are Mortons!

  • Sophie

They'd do much better if it was just:

    Jerry

    Jodie

    Mel

(perhaps Kayleigh if she was a better actress?)

Characters like Finlay, Daryll and Wilf just seem pointless to me.

  • Peter

    Just axe them already.

  • Tim

They aren't too bad, I didn't like them when they first came and then I didn't mind them, but I've gone off them again recently.

  • mike

not really morton related *i dont like them though the sooner they leave the better*

but to follow on what ant was saying havent the street got to many double acts

    noris reta

    rita doreen

    steve eileen

    steve loyd

    liam carla

    sean violet

    jack vera

    blanch ecials

    chesney shimical

  • Ant Parker

I like them all, especially Grandad, I love the double act he and Blanche are becoming

  • Sue

I've got used to them, but as the first message says, there are too many of them, and most of them aren't doing anything. What happened to the big romance between Jodie and Dev? What's happened to the youngest member of the family?

  • Nurse Florence Ganderpoke

I don't mind them :| They drove me potty to start, but even Grandad is growing on me now. I'm sorry to hear that the actress that plays Jodie is leaving as I don't think her character has been given much of a chance. Wasn't there rumours of a romance with her and Dev?! Melanie can stay but I wouldn't be sorry to see Darryl go. Dreadful!!

there are too many of them corri did the right thing in bringing the connors in 1 by 1 because then we got to see a little bit about there personalitys outside there family ties, but with the mortons they were just all thrown in together and it was to much to take in. jerry although he is the character iv most warmed to from the morton family is too much like sinbad was in brookside.

there are to many of them to develop them into inderviduals so know one really knows much about the characters alone just about there family.

i think the main problem is that they were poorly introduced to us.
