Monday Moan, why can't Charlie come back as Charlie?

charlie%20west.jpgSadly, the Monday Moan slot on Corrieblog has been resurrected over the last couple of weeks because there seems to be things happening on our favourite telly show that some of us aren't best pleased about. This week I'm having a good old rant about Charlie West. If this upcoming spoiler turns out to be true, then actor Keith Clifford will be turning up on Corrie to whisk Cilla off the cobbles. But actor Keith Clifford is well known to Coronation Street fans already as Charlie West. It just doesn't make sense, to me at least, to bring the actor back into Corrie as a different character when Charlie West was a classic Corrie man, and one of Corrieblog's Unsung Heroes. And not only that, he was well acquainted with Les Battersby as one of his mates. There's more over the jump, ooh, I haven't finished yet.

I mean, why bring the actor back as a different character when they could have easily brought him back as Charlie West which would have a) pleased the fans no end and b) made sense for Cilla to be running off with a mate of Les if he'd come into a fortune?

I'm so confused about this, it just doesn't make sense. If you're reading this and you can't remember Charlie West then I suppose it doesn't matter. But for those of us who do remember Charlie West, am I the only one that is more than a little annoyed with the actor coming back as someone else? If so, and it's just me, then I think a note to self will be in order: must get out more.

I'm with you 1,000,000% Glenda.

Isn't he the guy who sold Les the turkey?

He is, Sue and also a very dodgey camper van that belched smoke. He was a top character. Actually before he was Charlie, he played a bit part where he gave Alec Gilroy a huge tarantula type spider named Boris for Alec to display in the bar and get money out of the punters. The exchange where they were discussing old animal acts was one of the funniest things i've ever heard, with Raquel blankly trying to follow it.

I totally agree with you Glenda. It makes so much more sense to have him continue playing Charlie West.

I seriously would not classify him as a "classic Corrie man". I bet some viewers would have completely forgotten about his character as he has not been on the show as Charlie West for YEARS.

Though i do agree with the points you raise. It does seem rather stupid.

To me Charlie West is unforgetable regardless how many years have passed since his last appearance. An unique character if ever there was one. To sweep Cilla up and off the street would redeem him in the eyes of many locals, nay he would become their hero!

Sadly it also looks like he end of the Charlie West character. If this is the end we see of Cilla, this would also be a fitting 'end' for Charlie West - a name, like Nellie Harvey, that is familiar with us old time Corrie fans.
