Coronation Street's Liz McDonald is going to swap the cigs for nicotine patches in an effort to give up smoking. When the Rovers goes smoke-free this weekend, Liz will use it as an incentive to give up smoking. She’ll be seen on screen wearing nicotine patches and she’ll be chewing gum too. A Street source told the Manchester Evening news: "We've decided to make quite an issue of the ban because smoking affects so many people linked to the Rovers Return. It's not only the regulars who won't be seen smoking at the bar, there will also be a storyline surrounding Liz McDonald who will use the ban as a reason to quit. Steve is also going to struggle getting to grips with not being able to smoke at either of his two places of work"
Are Corrie doing the right thing here or does it sounds a bit like they’re preaching?
They're not preaching, just making use of a real-life storyline. It's good that its come up and they can integrate it into the show.
I think it's a good idea too. They can't realistically ignore that the smoking ban has come into place so they might as well have a storyline about it. I expect it's a good thing Les isn't around or there will be hell to pay!

I've just been reading that Steve is a smoker. I have never seen him do it on the show. I'm from Canada, have I just missed something or is it a habit he picks up in the future?
Steve has been a smoker for a while now, but you don't see him smoking as much as you see others.
I think it is great they are working this into the show- it's realistic. It wasn't till the other day that a friend was looking at my recent photos and noticed in the picture of me at the Rovers that there was a sign at the bar saying 'as of July 1st, public places in England will be smoke free.' (or something along that line.)
I wish my state would be smoke free everywhere. For the most part it is but bars and restaurants are not totally smoke free.This is a great idea because the actors who smoke on Corrie do influence people and having them stop smoking will help others to quit.
In my city, you aren't even allowed to smoke on outdoor restaurant patios or on government property out of doors.
