Is the sale of tobacco too visible on the Street?

norris1.jpgI have never really bought into seeing Coronation Street as a public service programme, but one thing that does cross my mind is how prominent the sale of tobacco is in both of the programme's shops. While all the other products on sale are turned at an angle or have their labels covered in some way, there is little that the designers can do to hide cigarette packets. The cigarette stand is, naturally, behind the counter and when there is an exchange between a shopkeep and customer (or indeed between Rita and Norris) the tobacco tends to be the only part of the set on show. I am a firm believer in people making their own decisions in life but with the English smoking ban coming into force on July 1st, I do wonder how long before some Watchdog jumps down Corrie's neck for this. It is reality though.

I'm sorry that this was brought to the viewer's attention as I am sure I am not the only one who never noticed the cigs behind the counter. I am usually too interested in the dialogue to look for something like that, but I am sure, now that it has been brought to the attention of millions of viewers, we will now be on the look-out. I have been an avid watcher for over 20 years and this is too small an issue to bring forth, and I am against smoking.

Whilst Corrie isn't intended to accurately represent real life, with all the murders and dramas etc., it is intended to take place in our world, if you see what I mean.

It just wouldn't make sense to have a corner shop and newsagents not selling cigarettes, or for them to be anywhere else in the shop besides behind the counter.

So I say they're fine how they are.

I think that there was a big pointer towards the smoking ban in last night's episode when Steve had a cigarette in the cab office but all we saw was him stubbing it out.

It will be interesting to see what they make of the smoking ban. They'll have to write it in so i'm sure you'll see the likes of Janice complaining and groups of them stood outside the pub puffing.

Dreary, Liz, Steve, Janis are all smokers. Mike Baldwin used to smoke cigars. I noticed they just asked for a packet of their "usual" never asked for a particular brand like you would, but that would be advertising. Dreary has to be the most anti smoking advert, with that leathery old face.

I've never noticed anyone buying cigarettes in Corrie, and I'm very anti-smoking.
