Jiltings have occurred on Coronation Street since the mid 1960s, making for some of the more memorable weddings on our screens. The first time it happened, the bride was none other than timid spinster, Emily Nugent. She proposed to her boss, Leonard Swindley, in a leap year 1964. He didn't really love her but decided it might be a good idea for them to settle down together. She realized that although she had loved him from afar for years, it wasn't the kind of lasting love and sent Jack Walker to church to tell Swindley it was off. He was embarassed but not all that crushed and went to the honeymoon hotel on his own for a few days.
Probably the most famous jilting was in 1984 when Mavis and Derek finally managed to get themselves sorted and planned a wedding. Nerves got the best of both of them and neither one of them turned up to the church! Mavis was affronted when she found out Derek jilted her because even though she jilted him as well, *he* didn't know that and didn't turn up! The next time we saw Derek, he had married Angela Hawthorne but that didn't last and in the end, he and Mavis made their way back together and married in 1988.
Two of my favourite jiltings were, first, the wedding between Sharon Gaskill and Ian Bentley in 1999 when she walloped him across the chops at the altar after finding out he was also trying to get into Natalie Horrocks' bed. She stalked out and down the cobbles of the Street while big snowflakes fell around her. The other more recent one that had most of us cheering was when Shelley Unwin walked away from controlling Charlie Stubbs at the altar and made her way back home through the streets of Weatherfield in her wedding clobber. Other jiltings include Jason running out on Sarah , Danny leaving Sally after finding out that she shagged Kevin the night before, Alan McKenna leaving Fiona Middleton gaping at the altar (more on that in another post). Can you think of any others?
