Crisis for the Croppers

royhayleycups.jpgDidn't I just finish complaining because Roy and Hayley hadn't had a major storyline in ages? Well, ask and ye shall receive, apparently! The Mirror is reporting a new story for the Croppers starting later in the summer that's going to rock the foundations of their relationship and give the neighbours on Coronation Street a lot of gossip fodder. With shades of the 2005 movie, Transamerica flavouring the storyline, it's going to be revealed that Hayley has an adult son! Part of me thinks "oh, so you didn't think that storyline up yourselves and had to take it from a movie", but the other part thinks "Fantastic!" and that part wins! I think this is going to be an excellent story for the Croppers.

It looks like it will unfold slowly which is the best way to do it. From what I gather from the newpaper article, Harold Patterson is the father of a son he didn't know about until now and Hayley has to find the young man. If you think back to when Roy and Hayley were first together, we, including Roy, were under the impression that he was her "first". This revelation is sure to shake up Roy's faith in Hayley but I have Faith in the Croppers. They will endure and with a bit of luck, they'll be one happy family at the end of it. All of Roy and Hayley's dramatic storylines seem to be handled well. The writing is always sensitive and the acting is always superb. I'm looking forward to it.

I think this sounds fantastic, a really excellent idea of whoever thought it up at Granada TV.

I think you should definitely talk about that in your next podcast!!

Damn! I though of this idea a few weeks ago and felt that it could become a great storyline. Basically the way I saw it working was as so:

H's son comes to Coronation Street looking for his long lost father. Seeing the boy, Hayley has pity on him and offers him a room at his house. When asking him why he's here, he says that he's looking for his father, a Mr Harold Patterson. Hayley is shocked and can't decide whether she should tell him or not.

Oh well, it's not the first time that one of my ideas as found it's way into TV...

I think the Roy + Hayley story is a great idea... but will the story of Sean having a baby with Violet just get lost now? In a way they're slightly similar stories involving untraditional fathers.

oh yay...
you got rid of the numbers/security form we had to fill in to post.
Wasn't a big fan of it :)

I don't hate the idea, but I don't know if I would buy that Harold was ever involved with a woman. I guess I've always pictured Haley as having been gender confused since her teenage years. I guess Harold probably experimented though...

It's quite common for people like Hayley or someone struggling with their sexuality to be confused and wanting to do things to make themselves seem "normal" and fit in. I can see this as a very credible experience in Hayley's past.

I can't take this seriously at all. I very much doubt 'Harold' would have actually got involved with a woman.

I am hating the sound of this (again).

I usually stand by Corrie on their latest storylines, but this time, I'm not. I think it is a completely unrealistic storyline that won't work. I know Harold had a girlfriend (I think she was called Ruth) who they visited when on the run with Wayne, but this would have been mentioned at some point. I hope Corrie shelf this idea as it looks terrible.

I don't know. I think Corrie overdoes the big dramatic stories sometimes - I enjoy some of the smaller stories that can be little gems in themselves. Having said that, though, I have been knocked out by stories that sounded overdone before they played out, such as Richard Hillman and Tracy seducing (not really) Roy.

Hating the sound of this too. Its sooo obvious that Julie Hersmonsaugh who plays Hailey is not a man! If they were going to do storylines like this they should have got a real transgender to play the role, adams apple an all!

I love the sound of this story not because of the son that may or may not turn up but because of the strain it will cause for the Croppers and that should be excellent to watch. Roy will be heartbroken that Hayley has lied to him.

This sounds like an awful storyline. We've invested in Roy and Hayley's close relationship built on honesty and trust and now the writers want to fling it back in our faces for the sake of a cheap twist and a dose of sensationlism.
There are some characters where a teenage child could just turn up out of the blue and it be plausible but Hayley isn't one of them I'm afraid.

For my own reasons, I'm shocked and horrified at this idea. It was CLEARLY established that Hayley was an unhappy teenager, and had no experience of sex. She even rejected the advances of Ruth (remmeber her?). This is an example of character assassination, pure and simple, and places Hayley in the dubious position of being an out and out liar. Not plausable.

Since Granada spent so much tiume trying to be true to the character nearly 10 years ago, I find it upsetting and disappointing that the current story team (few of whom were onhand during the character's creation) are so willing to play fast and loose with established information for the sake of a cheap laugh of two.

What next? Ken Barlow comes out as gay? Emily running a money laundering racket?

It just very sordid if you ask me. Hailey has always come across as one of the "lovable" characters and to think she shagged a woman in the past is just very tacky if you ask me!!

Annie: some very good points, very well made.
