Corrie gives Malta tourism boost

Comments (9)

abc.JPGThings looked so bleak last year for the holiday island of Malta that there was speculation that a major British tour operator was considering taking Malta out of its brochures. But now, believe it or not, it says here that the Malta holiday websites are singing the praises of our favourite soap for helping get more tourists onto the Island to revive its flagging fortunes. Yes, the upcoming Coronation Street storyline set in Malta, starring Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver), Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and assisted by none other than 1970s Confessions of… actor Robin Askwith (oh yes!), has given the island a tourism boost. Aah, I think that’s really nice.

There's a woman here who saw some of the filming while on honeymoon in Malta last week.

I went to Malta on my honeymoon in 1985 with my first husband.

Since then he ditched me for my best friend (seriously although I could give Corrie plots a run for their money).

I still have very fond memories of Malta...............not so the ex husband.

But like all Corrie plots, the good win through and I am happily married again and living in Canada now!

And of course, still an avid Corrie fan although I hate how we are so far behind, especially since my arrival in Canada in 2000 saw us only 6 weeks behind and now we are what? 9 months behind!

Actually, she approached me before any filming when I first arrived to the beach, I did not know her or who she was. She walked up to me, out of the blue, and said hello, like I should know who she was. The filming started about half an hour later, and that is when I got the camera out.

And secondly, in regards to the man stuck in the drain, I am a doctor, and would have insisted on the amputation. It was a very bad situation.

Who's full of herself - that blogger. As if she would have been in a position to make a decision about an amputation for the poor soul whose foot was caught in the drain. Anyone living in Britain today knows of Corrie Street and at least some of its characters - they're in the newspaper and magazines all the time. Well, this "boring mindless housewife" (of which I am not) would like to let her know...don't ever set foot in Canada, sweetie...your reception won't be near as warm as the Maltese. I'm sure HRH Elizabeth II (an admitted Corrie watcher) would be pleased by your description of the Street's fans.

If the blogger was taking photos, then Sue would naturally think the woman knew who she was. Why take photos else? Sue was being friendly going over. She certainly wasn't being stuckup or full of herself.

Saying that, I've met close to 35 of the Corrie actors now and if I'm asked who was my least favourite, without hesitating I would say Sue Cleaver the first time I met her. I don't know if she was having a bad day at the British Isles show in Toronto, but she was miserable and left me with the impression she did not appreciate her fans. I didn't find her down to earth at all. It's funny how those few moments can change your opinion of the character as well. Its only after meeting her again recently that hubby and I have stopped calling her a miserable *itch when we see her on the screen.

It's fair enough. She's not a fan so wouldn't really expect to know the actress but it seems to me that, whether Sue Cleaver thought she'd be recognized or not, coming up to someone and being friendly to them is not stuck up in my books. I've met Sue, albeit at a fan event where everyone knew yer, but she came across as *very* down to earth.

To be fair to the blogger, I don't think she sounds stuck up. She does admit to not being a Corrie fan and not really knowing who Eileen/Sue was from TV. If I was that blogger and I was watching an actress I didn't know do some filming and then the actress came up to me and expected me to know who she was, even if the actress was well-intentioned, I'd be a bit like "ooh, get her" sort of thing too.

I agree Tvor, that doesn't really make sense does it? It sounds to me like that blogger is the stuck up one.

That was a bit mean spirited of some of her comments about Sue Cleaver don't you think? She said "Eileen" was stuck up and full of herself yet said the actress came over and spoke to her, a complete stranger. I doubt someone stuck up would do that.
