Join gay Corrie debate at Queer Up North

Tony_warren_with_doris_speed Coronation Street creator Tony Warren (pictured here with Doris Speed who played Annie Walker), along with Corrie writer Jonathan Harvey and actor Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) will be attending the Queer Up North festival to debate the question: "Is Corrie the queerest soap ever?".  The debate will take place as part of Manchester's Queer Up North festival which celebrates gay and lesbian arts and culture. Tony and Jonathan have picked a series of Corrie clips which they believe will prove Coronation Street is a pioneer in its treatment of homosexuality and gay issues. The event takes place on Wednesday May 9 at Manchester's Cornerhouse Cinema. Tickets are for sale by calling 0161 200 1500 or from the Queer Up North website. A spokesman for Queer Up North told the Manchester Evening News: "We wanted to put together a relaxed, fun event and explore all the ways that Corrie has been pioneering in the ideas and treatment of gay characters. It's been the first soap to really show gay characters in any realistic way. The show's creator, Tony Warren, was out as a gay man years before homosexuality was decriminalised and so will obviously have a lot to say about the issue in regards to his soap. He and Jonathan Harvey have put together some clips from the show and will be talking about them and discussing them with Antony Cotton. It's going to be a really interesting event - bringing together the man who started the soap, the man who is now one of the leading writers of the show, and Antony, one of the most popular characters."

Bravo for Corrie. It always did have an element of camp and was all the better for it!

If anyone gets to go to this event, which sounds fab, do let us know what it was like and we can blog it! email flaming_nora@hotmail.co.uk

Just got back from 'Queer Corrie' not knowing exacting what to expect. It was, as imagined though, a mix of clips, chat and Q&A with Tony Warren, Anthony Cotton, Jonathan Harvey and Damien Rochefort (sp?)

Classic 'queer' moments were shown and discussed; obviously with the emphasis on Sean's character but also the relationship between Todd and Carl. It was great to see Eileen and Gail fighting in the street again on the 'big screen'.

Mention was made to Hayley and her character and apparently, there's a storyline coming up which brings to the fore Hayley's past!!

I so wanted to ask why the Peacock's stairs have moved to the opposite side of the lounge, but even after a couple of beers later after the event I didn't have the courage to ask afterwards as they were drinking in the bar at the venue; with Rupert Hill and Jenny Platt.
