Corrie’s top tearjerkers – Judy Mallett pegs out

Comments (3)

Judy_mallett_dead_1 We’re a right bunch of softies here at Corrieblog Manor. Last week we were almost in tears when Jason sang to baby Holly and it prompted us to think about our favourite tearjerker Coronation Street stories. And so, every day this week, each of the Corrieblog team will post their favourites.

Today we kick off with Flaming Nora who tells us about Judy Mallett pegging out. Click through below to read all.

Peacock1999_2 My favourite tearjerker storyline was when Judy Mallett died in the back yard of No. 9, clutching the washing line as her twin babies – Billy and Becky – cried for their mum. The reason this story affected me so much and can still bring a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye is that Judy’s death took place on the same day as Ashley and Maxine were wed -  September 24, 1999.

Judy’s husband Gary had gone to the wedding alone as Judy was complaining of pains in her leg after she’d been injured as a passenger in Vera Duckworth’s car. Vera had unknowingly been driving a dodgy car that went out of control (as son Terry had given his mum a “cut and shut” motor). Gary Mallett was Ashley’s best man and as he was making his best man’s speech at the wedding, talking about how he hoped Ashley and his new bride would be as happy as he and Judy were, the scene cut back and forth between the wedding and the yard, the yard and the wedding, as Judy fell to her death when the blood clot in her leg travelled to her lungs and she collapsed and died of a pulmonary embolism. You could say she pegged out as she was pegging out the washing. Crikey, I’m starting to fill up just writing about it now!

When my Great Aunty Pat Phoenix left the show in 1984 and said 'Ah Now!, there's a question!' with a smile lol Elsie was the best!! This is a message for my Great Aunty Pat ok. Pat I love you so much and missing all of the stuff that I dreamt of!! I will promise that I will be on Coronation Street by 2010!! also making sure I can feel you when I need you so rest in peace Aunty. I am larger than life!

A 'cut and shut' is two cars shoved together to look like one. Very dodgy indeed.

Was a sad episode. I seem to remember Sharon trying to OD as well in this one.

I did not get to see this episode...that was before cable...what is a “cut and shut" car?

I wish I hd seen this one...it must have been hard to film and be that actress to do it...
