Coronation Street unsung (junkyard) hero - Charlie West

Comments (1)

Charliewest1We started hearing the name of Charlie West out of the mouth of Les Battersby not long after he moved to Coronation Street. Seems Squire West was a jack of all traders, he could get you anything for a price. Charlie West eventually appeared, played by the wonderful Keith Clifford. We heard about Charlie more than we saw him but when we did, it was always a comic gem.

The first time we met him, he brought the Battersby Christmas turkey around. Only it wasn't dead yet! There was the time he lent Les a clapped out old camper van that barely ran and when it did, it belched huge amounts of smoke. Who can forget Les doing some work for Charlie and getting paid with a mountain of bog roll? I think I shall never forget the Christmas of the multiplying Santas in the cafe where, later after the cafe closed, Charlie West, dressed as Santa, was hired by Roy to serve his lady love Hayley a romantic dinner. Star!

Charliewestsanta_4Charliewestles_3Alas, we don't see Charlie West anymore, nor do we ever hear his name. Too bad. Squire West was one of those wonderful  characters that always lent a bit of fun to Coronation Street!

Good choice for the unsung hero list. These off again, on again characters add realism to the Corrie where too often all life's needs (work, home, food, entertainment etc) are provided in one block on one street. Charlie West in indeed a jem.
