Top 50 Countdown of Favourite Corrie Characters – No 15

Comments (5)

Todd_grimshaw_gay_kissNo 15 Todd Grimshaw Todd was just another Corrie bloke but we’ve put him so high in our Top 50 list because in Coronation Street terms he is hugely important. Todd was Corrie’s first (male) gay character, an important leap forward in the Street recognizing the real world, at last.  Shame he had to go and fancy his girlfriend’s brother though!  He broke Sarah Platt’s heart and it was left to Todd’s brother Jason to mend the pieces for her.  Todd went off to live in London after turning down a place at Oxford University and breaking mum Eileen’s heart.

Most famous for:
Being the first openly gay character in Corrie, performing Corrie’s first gay kiss. Should Todd be in our Top 50 list at No 17 – what do you think? Check out our Top 50 so far.

yay Todd!
I hope Eileen pops up somewhere too?!

Hey Vince - no sooner said than done :)

I thought Todd was great, as well as being great to look at, but somehow he wasn't on the show long enough to rate on this list. I also found the whole story of realizing he was gay after being madly in love with Sarah too contrived - I know many gay men are in denial for a time, but the story just seemed too forced for me, as if it came up at a late night writing session when they wanted to have a shocking story. That isn't the actor's fault, of course - he did an excellent job with what he had to work with.

It's good to see Todd ranked so highly in the list! He was a fantastic character- it's a shame he left when he did :(

Nancy, the storyline was actually planned from the start, so it wasn't just dreamt up suddenly in order to have a shocking story. If you think back, there were actually many hints suggesting he was gay right from the start. I do agree though that it happened on screen perhaps too suddenly. Although I think it's obvious now, looking back, that Todd wasn't actually madly in love with Sarah- it was more the idea of being a family that he was madly in love with! If the family unit with Sarah and Bethany wasn't there, then I'm not sure whether things would have moved on so fast for him and Sarah....they'd probably just have had a very short fling.

Interesting, Laura - i did not know that this story was long in planning, and I must have missed the little earlier hints that he might be gay. I'm about 8 months behind you, in Canada, and when I read that the gay story was coming it seemed a stretch at the time. Good point that Todd may have been in love with the idea of a family, rather than in lust with Sarah. I always really enjoyed the scenes with Todd, and was sad when he left the show.
And I'm glad that Sean has remained on the show, rather than that smirking boyfriend that Todd had! He was annoying!
