Top 50 Countdown of Favourite Corrie Characters - No 28

Watts_raquel1997Raquel Watts (nee Wolstenhulme) Oh Raquel, how we loved you. To some you were the archetypal tart with a heart, a ditzy blonde with hidden depths and a wonderful sense of comic timing.

But you were more than that. We laughed with you, never at you. We cried when you longed for an escape to a better life.

Dallying with modelling and earning the Miss Bettabuys title proved a pasing fancy. Dallying with lowly ranking footballers and press officers proved bittersweet and was never going to be good enough for you.

You found your new life with a widowed French wine producer. Ever-reliable, sweet Curly gave you his blessing, but not before one of the most memorable episodes of Corrie ever.

Good luck Raquel wherever you are. What would I give to see you return one day? I know. Aint never gonna happen.

Most famous for: Learning to speak French with Ken Barlow, breaking Curly's heart. So is the wonderful Raquel high enough up the list? You decide! Here's the rest. [Linda]

I loved Raquel. She managed to make the character so much more than a ditzy blonde. So sorry she will not consider returning to the show.

We would have to see your entire list at once to decide where these characters should be!

Hi Nancy...thanks. I think she was one of those characters where the actor and writing gelled so well to make something really special...I'm also waiting to see the rest of the list :)

I also read in one Corrie book that the writer who wrote for Racquel never met Sarah Lancashire, by choice, because to do so would have spoiled the magic of the character.

Interesting that the writer refrained from meeting the actress - I can understand that. And good point, Linda, that the writers work with the characters. Raquel had a trick of lingering on certain words in her breathy, Marilyn Monroe voice - fantastic.

I hadn't heard that a writer wrote for a particular character - is this mainly the case?

Nancy, I'm not sure about the writing situation I just remember reading about the one who wrote for Racquel and it stuck in my head. Can anyone remember which writer it was?

I think Raquel should be in the top 5...she was extraordinary...beautiful
to look at, and so believable...miss her!!!

Yeah, Raquel, you were the first real piece of eye candy for the teenage male viewers. We miss you!

Certainly not - Raquel should be No 1 - just behind Bet. A lovely innocent and sincere character - as well as a cracking bit of eye candy for the teenage male viewers.
