Top 50 Countdown of Favourite Corrie Characters – No 50

Comments (11)

Fred_elliot_in_butcher_cap No. 50 Fred Elliot Coronation Street’s burly butcher Fred Elliot starts off our Top 50 Countdown of Favourite Corrie Characters which will run all the way through December.  Fred, played by John Savident, first appeared on Corrie in 1994 when he tried to bribe the judge in a black pudding competition. Fred was Grand Master of the Weatherfield Square Dealers and senior partner in the Street racehorse, Betty's Hotshot.  He died on his wedding day, on Audrey Roberts’ front door mat, before he could marry fiancée Bev Unwin.

Most famous for:
His Cumberland ring, serial proposing to ladies of the street, I say asking women to marry him, and also for repeating his phrases.  Should Fred be bottom of our Top 50 list, coming in at No 50 – what do you think? Check out the whole of our Top 50.

I think Fred should have been much higher in the list! At least in the top 20, he has added so much to the show! He should have definately been higher than the Webster girls!

  • myra

    great charcther

  • Margaret

There are a number of characters higher up the list such as the Webster sisters that should not be ahead of Fred. No way, I say, NO WAY. Life on the street will be very dull without Fred. I'm quite frankly shocked he is number 50 and not in the top ten.

  • jack

yeah i have to agree with some people, that fred should be at the top......... aroudn 10-20

  • Remember that the list is purely subjective (ie. on our whim!) so it won't be everyone's cup of tea and the top 10 could generate some comements too but I do hope we manage to get a few of *your* favourites in the top 50 during December.

A lot of characters have come and gone in Coronation Street over the years, and I'm reserving my judgement until I see the full list!

  • mona

I'd have thought he'd be up in the top five! A wonderful character and will be so missed!

  • Vince

thought he'd be higher up :)

Whoever is number 1 has a lot to live to!

  • Nether Nell

Oops! No wonder it seems like longer than 8 years - it was longer than 8 years! 1994 - 2006 = 12 years!!! Still, it seems like longer than that too!

  • Nether Nell

It always seems to me that Fred Elliot was a part of Weatherfield for much longer than 8 years. A big man who made a big impression and seemed to fit in right from the start.

Great choice! I am glad he made the list. He is certainly memorable.
