Street Tours

Once upon a time the public could visit the set of  Coronation Street and tread those famous cobbles, peek through the letterboxes and walk up the ginnel. However, Granada closed the set in 2002 and as far as I know it’s been shut ever since to the great unwashed of the general public (that's you and me).  I have heard, however, that if you visit the Museum of Science and Industry on  Liverpool Road that’s opposite the Corrie studios, you can get a glimpse of the set from the windows upstairs.  I don’t know if that’s true, but if you’ve done it let us know.  For those of you with no time to go peeking through museum windows, there’s an online tour on a BBC website that lets you view the street in 360 degrees from the comfort of your chair.

Yes, You can. We went to a Garden where the stars learn scripts on a VIP day - and next to the Enterance of MSI, down a small street - is the ITV Granada Studios. Through a little gap - you can actually walk straight onto the street. Even though - it is constantly protected by big iron gates & security guards.

*Quakes with excitment* Thrilling! :-D

I think Granada Studios is wrong in their assumption that those who would like to seeThe Street ,have already done so, the Street is so beloved and keeps drawing in many new fans who would be interested in the tour as well. My family has been fans since the 60's and my husband's family are new devotees as of this past year....They are rabid fans too and would very much love to take the tour. My sister &I have made the tour twice already and returned to have another look in October 2004 just to be disappointed that the trip to Manchester was made in vain... We had made the train trip from London where we were on vacation specifically to take the Street tour again, just to stand on the Street we love so much.o the Studio is wrong in assuming that once seen ,fans would never come again. I would beg them to reconsider.Susan from Scarborough,Ontario,Canada

Granada Studios tour closed - what madness !!!! Thank goodness for the internet. I logged on to find the opening times before travelling 350 miles to visit for the third time. My son was looking forward to seeing it all, especially as he is interested in a career in television. The UK never ceases to amaze me, a sad country indeed. Do you think L.A. would have closed such a fantastic visitor attraction - I don't think so.

I would thnik nothing of hopping on a plane for 6 hours, just to visit the set for 1-2-3 days and then come back home. Take a few pictures, maybe run into some cast members... Hey, what are my chances of being a volunteer "background actor" just so I can see the set? Anyone out there have any ideas?
Big fan in Ontario, Canada.

I have visited the studio in 1988 & 1993 and was looking forward to do so again next year before sailing the QEII to New York. What a disappointment.

We went to the Museum of Science and Industry and in the main building if you go upstairs, right next to a water energy display is a window, if you look out of it you're looking right onto Coronation Street and into the back gardens of Gail Platts / Ashley Peacocks houses. We spent about half an hour noseying at it :)

I have just come back from a trip to the Manchester Science and Industry Museum and i heard it was possible to see the Street from a window. The problem was, the window was in the children's area where we werent allowed to go!! i was so annoyed!! I have only been once to Granada Studies but i really wanted to go again!!! Im so upset about it!!! I think it is maddness that they closed it! The lst time i went, i was only about 9 years old so i didnt really appreciate the tour as much as i would now.

I am going to visit Manchester in the summer and one of my priority visits was Coronation Street. I am from Canada and follow the show religiously. I will be very disappointed if I can't get to see the Street. Can anybody help a faithful fan who is coming a long way to explore?

I've always been a huge fan of Corrie, and was really disappointed to find the tour has been closed. Why close it when it attracted so many tourists????? I really do hope it opens again, I'd love to walk across the Corrie cobbles and see their houses and the Rovers return! My grandma once went and saw them filming cool or what???? ps.rosie is da best, I'd love to see that family filming!

I have been brought up on Coronation St and I have visited the set.For an Easter trip I was going to bring the family,a special treat for my 8 year old daughter( a new corrie fan).
What can I say,
How disappointing for everyone!

Does anyone know of a website anywhere with a valid reason as to why they shut it?

Perhaps to voice our discontent we should gather near the studios on filming days and continually sound airhorns to disrupt their activities, and show that we regard them the same way they have regarded us...with contempt!

really disappointed that we can't see the street, we were hoping to bring my elderly parents and give them a special day out. My 8 yr old son really disappointed as well. Come on Granada sort it out remeber it the fans that keep the show going.....

My mother used to watch coronation street , now i watch it regularly, and my daughter and son watch it too. we would of loved to visit the street this summer and was very disapointed to read that we could not.my mum visited when she was with us .My daughter and I would have liked to as well.

Can't believe sumone called the U.K a sad country!

Ok its sad it has been closed (have been there myself), but there are other things to do in the UK. Cadburys etc.

Hi how disappointing that Granada Studios have closed.
I visited with my husband, then again with my mum and dad and son. Now I was searching to find opening times to take my daughter and her friend and its shut!!!!
This street is an on going national heritiage and the younger generations are still interested in visiting following in their mums and nans footsteps please try and reopen. The whole experience was great going behind the scenes to the make-up, weather dept etc. really good fun I am sure there is still a need for this type of entertainment.

I too am so disappointed. I have been a fan since the 80's and have watched my favorite street faithfully. I've watched in both the US and Canada. Now that I am finally able to come to England this summer, no tours! Oh well, I guess there's always the crown jewels.

OH NO!!!
I'm a faithful Canadian fan who has barely missed a show in over 8 years and was planning to visit the set on my first trip to England this fall - I'm devastated to find out that I no longer can!

What a disappointment!!!

Any chance they might change their minds? Any suggestions for any sort of Corrie experience while in England?!?

One of the main reasons we are taking our vacation in England was to visit the set of Coronation Street. Manchester City Council should have a few words with Granada Studios, if tourism is a priority. Many people just wont spend their money in Manchester for this very reason. Think about it!!

ssI have been in a lucky position to provide a service for certain props on the set. I have actually been on the set watching them filming several times. It's really strange when you walk thru the dark studios to be presented with a brightly lit rovers return set, complete with Bev behind the bar and all the other cast. I have also been inside some the the shops and house, the house are just dirty bare brick inside and some of them have offices at the top which are very small. The corner shop is just blue walls inside with a few metal shelves, it's a real mess. I have seen most of the cast and crew wandering around and I can tell you it's a nice treat.

Was hopingto take my disabled sister to the Street as she has been battling with skin cancer & hasn't had a break from the four walls of her isolated accomodation for years - Corrie is tops & a tradition in our family - HUGELY DISSAPPOINTED

Bruce

My daughter is 13 yrs old and is an avid fan of Corrie. I have told her that a few years back I visited the studio and had a fantastic time looking at the set. She is staying up in Manchester this week on a summer camp and would love to go Granda TV studios. Now I will have to tell her that the hightlight of her week has been extinguished! THANKS!

I have never been to the Street before and I really wanted to go in the summer holidays. I'm 12 years old and Coronation Street is my favorite soap ever and all I wanted to do was to stand on the Street. All of my family has been, except me!I really hope that Granada TV studios open up again very soon so I can stand were the people on TV stand.

Last Friday, here in New Zealand, I was fortunate to win breakfast at the Hilton Hotel with Kate Ford (Tracy Barlow). What an amazing woman! She was so down to earth and easy to talk to, it was probably the highlight of my life. I am a huge fan of the show, and of Kates character Tracy, and now having met Kate, a total fan of hers! I could not speak highly enough of her. She is just tops! Back in 2003 I went all the way to England, and top of the agenda was Liverpool for the beatles, and Manchester for the Coronation street tour. I was devastated to find they had stopped the tours...I couldn't believe it! I even went back over the next year, but still no luck. They must realise that there is still a huge amount of people worldwide each year, who would love nothing more than to be able to walk those famous cobbles of The Street. Come on Granada!!...get your act together!!...and listen to the fans!! If it opened again, I'd be on the next plane over!

My famil are coming over from Ireland who avid corrie fans - they were all wanting - 8 of them to visit teh street.

Its still attracting new fans it seems bizarre that such a high profile attraction for Granada wouold close

I went on the granada studios tour when i was 12 and thoroughly enjoyed walking down the famous coronation street. Its such a shame that this tour is now closed.Maybe its because the show films more episodes now that they just havent the time for tours?By the way, anyone else who went on the granada studios tour, can they remember the part of the tour that took you into a make-up department, where the guide explains the sighting of a ghost, then a special effect of a ghost/hologram of an old man walked straight throught the middle of the room!Quality!Apart from seeing coronation street, that was a personal highlight of the tour!

From a window of the 2nd floor of Manchester Science and Industry Museum (building 1), you'll be able to watch the backgardens and Coronation Street). Very clear view.(small signpost warning you not to take pics as all Corrie materials are copyrighted- but who is going to notice you taking a quick snap?)
Entrance is free to the Museum
Cheers

We visited the Science museum earlier this week and watched them filming from the windows of the 'Xperiment' room.
At one point Shaun from the factory turned and looked up at us and waved, and Violet looked up and smiled. Tracy Barlow was sitting on the pavement waiting for her turn to be filmed.
Gayle's back garden is right below the window, so it is a very clear view. You can only see one section of the street though, near the corner shop.
At the time we went (early afternoon), there was no one there stopping you going into the Xperiment room without children (although we did have them with us, that was why we'd gone), but earlier on there had been queues for the room so they were counting you in.
I too think it's a shame they closed the tours, I went once and it was excellent. There's a new generation of people watching corrie now (our children), and we'd love to be able to take them. If people were stopping going, perhaps they had the entry price too high?

i am so dissapointed in finding out coronation set as closed down to have a day at! as an avid fan ive always wanted to go on the set since being little and now i get my chance has been shut down! disgraceful! where can you go these days without everything beig shut down

I'm so gutted that you can no longer visit the street. Who makes these kind of decisions?? I was a student in Manchester but left just as the Studio tours began & I always thought I'd get there one of the days but each time I returned to the city it was for a wedding or party so I never got chance. I've lived in France for 16 years now & apart from a couple of trips back to the UK each year have to resort to updates on the internet to follow "Corrie" which of course I do avidly. Planning ahead to what I'd really like to do for my 40th Birthday next year , number 1 idea was to visit the street & bring my family with me.
Manchester's a great city & prides itself on its social / economic history & working class culture so surely it should reopen what in my opinion is one of the key elements of Manchester culture.

Guess it'll be a visit to the Science museum next year.

Some pictures me and my friend took whilst visiting the museum:

i have visited coronation street twice in the nineties and was really looking forward to taking my daughter who is a massive fan of the show aswell, it is such a shame they closed it,i also agree with john savident beloved fred who said instead of tryng to put the show out so many times a week, bring back the quality. and im sure if they revamped and brought back the tours it would bring a whole legion of fans from this country and abroad to walk on those famous cobbles.

I stayed in Manchester on Oct 04, and a highlight was going to be a visit to Coronation St - with my sons (in their 20's) as they have grown up with me in NZ & Aust. watching the soap!! What a disappointment to find out it had closed after travelling half way around the world!!! I have been a Coro fan since it started in NZ back in the 60's!!! When we moved ot Australia 8 years ago - it wasn't shown here so my girlfriend taped it and sent it over to me up til this year.

How disappointing! My wife & I are big fans & were planning a trip in April 07 to England, especially with a trip to Manchester & to the set of Coronation Street. This makes no sense not to continue to build your brand & show your loyal fans some support back. VERY VERY frustrating.

Why doesn't someone set up a petition on the net and when they have got bout 20,000 signitures (shouldnt be hard) send it off to Granada? Surely there is funding available for it to remain open as a theme park even if it is only 6 months a year.

We want to take our grandchildren on a visit to The Street. They are great fans and will be so disappointed if they cant go.

Comming to visit from Canada, but it would appear that my wife and I will not get a chance to visit the street. It's kind of sad as we the fans keep the show alive. Even if it was open for the summer only would make the fans feel a little less ripped off!!!!!!!

I visited the street twice once when i was about 7 then again when i was about 11 years old i would have loved to visit again i am truly gutted it has stopped doing tours i think they should really consider starting it back up again please please, i'm 24 now my mum took me and my sis, i would love to have the opportunity to take my kids there x

We've visited the studio tours on a few occasions and it was magical. And getting the chance to walk down the cobbled street - brilliant. Went there once, really enjoyed it.... SHAME on closing it down.Found it very interesting, and saw some of the actors up close.viz Johnny Riggs Where can I put in a protest and see if we can get it re opened?

Dissappointed....from CANADA

Our entire family is very very disappointed about the tour closing. I have been a fan since age 7 and my husband (whose mum grew up in London) watched on and off as a child, but has been an avid fan the past 18 yrs. Both our sons (7 and 10) have been watching since birth, really. We are coming to the UK for a visit and was trying to find a way to see The Street - it being at the top of my boys list of things to do while in England. We recently saw Jenny McAlpine (Fizz) when she arrived at the airport in St. John's, NL only a few metres away from us - and my eldest wanted to say hello but chickened out. Now we are not even sure if we will stay in Manchester as we have no friends or family nearby. If there was some way..

Come on Manchester! YOU LOT UP THERE WHO WANT TO BE THE SECOND CITY. What a let down, no Coronation Street tours, you are letting yourselves down, aren't you? As a Brummie, I enjoyed my tour, 15 years ago, but when I want to bring my boys, no chance. They would dearly love to come. What is going on, with all the money, you mancunians, have pumped up there, I wonder why? Come to Birmingham,we have lots of attractions here.

Well I wanted to take my child and i was very very disapointed when i looked up how much it was on the internet that it was closeed.i went into the manchester science museum and yes you can see the weathy arms and kevin and tyrones graage and jason and charlies workshop you can see clair and ashleys garden and jerry's house next door and darren's shed is huge in real life you can see gails house also underworld and the corner shop and last you can see jack and verer's house
Someone needs to get through to granada tv to get them to open it back up!!!

i went to the science and industry museum on the 5/06/2007 and last yyear awelll and i have been a corrie fan since i was 2 years old. and when i came home typed into my computer coronation street tours and came up saying they were closed how sad is that i have been desperate to look round the set since i was 4years old and thought up until now that you could still tour around the set. yesterday i stood looking out of the windows for 2 and a half hours just watching them film and walking down to get their make-up done. i saw 15 of the stars and they were Vernnn, Molly, Tyrone, Cilla, Doreen, Rita, Janice, Eileen, Sally, Kevin, Rosie, Kelly, Carla, Leanne and Paul not sure may have been Liam!!!
because i am so dissapointed with Granada Studios i have wrote a letter asking them why they have closed the tours also telling them that i have seen them filming and i found the address and posted it. i am hoping that they reply to my questions and give me good answers. i do hope they reply and if they do, whatever they say i will put on this website. I AM STILL DEVASTATED WITH GRANADA STUDIOS.

Yes, if you look at the 360 Degree picture thing, look at Underworld's front doors, and the 3 thin windows above it, well the windows BEHIND there, on the mill... those are the windows on the first floor of the Museum of Science and Industry, in the hands-on area, mainly for kids (adults CAN go in without restriction!), and from there you can see the street.

I went to Manchester for the first time in June 2007 my priority was a visit to Coronation Street as I have watched it for years and was looking forward to this tour so much ,so dissappointed to learn the tours had stopped would return if tours recommenced.

I visited the Studio Tours on no less than 3 occasions over a period of 10 years.

However, one of the problems with it is that it tended to be something most people only did once. In other words, once you've visited the set of Coronation Street you've seen it & that's it.

The closure of the Studio Tours came at a time when television companies were coming under pressure to rationlise resources and reduce costs. This is the reason why it closed because by 1999 the company was running the tours at a loss!

I am disappointed that you cant go to the street to view one of my favourite programmes, the lady that wrote america wouldn't have closed the site is correct they could see the protential to make money pity Granada didn't people would pay to see it. We have come from New Zealand and it isn't cheap to come across, one thing I was looking forward to seeing was Coronation St, for Granada to say everyone should have seen it by now get real Coronation Street is worldwide and not everybody can hope on a plane. Fans grow more and more

If the studio is closed because there is not expected to be enough interest, why do people keep watching the show? On the basis it has been going for 40 odd years,is that not testimony to keeping it going? What is the real reason for closing it?

We went to the science and industry museum yesterday and it is true that you can see much of the street from the top floor windows in the xperiment room. We watched Violet, Shaun and Eileen filming a scene, while Gail and David were waiting for their turn. Shaun looked up at the windows and waved to everyone. However even though some people were, you were not allowed to take pictures and a museum worker came over and told people to move away from the windows because a Granada producer was complaining.

I went to Manchester on holidays this summer and had planned to take a tour of coronation street but i was told that the tour had closed down several years ago however on the 2nd floor of the museum of science and industry(MOSI) in the X-periment room you can see the settings of coronation like Gail Platt's back garden, Ashley Peacock's back garden, Vera and Jack Duckworth's house, D&S corner shop and The Kaben. I went to the museum around 10:30 on a wednesday morning and there wasnt many people in the Xpirement room so i went straight over to the window and i was lucky to arrive at the time of them filming out Gail Platts backgarden with Gail,David and their next door neighbours.they were filming a scene with david hiding a gun out his back it was great!!! i stayed there for about 2 hours and then went out for lunch. I was told there was a restaurant near the studios that the cast went to such as Vera & Jack Duckworth and Les Battersbey so i went there unfortunately none of them were there but there were loads of pictures of them. After lunch we headed to the aircraft museum ( opposite MOSI) but we decided to take a quick look at the settings again. We looked out the window and Sean,Jamie,Audrey and Bill were filming on the street whenever they finished a scene Sean waved to us. Then the cast were getting ready to film out Ashley Peacocks back garden and i saw Claire and Eileen reading there lines.

*It was a great expierence*

If you ever visit the museum to see Coronation street there is a pub nearby called "The Old Grapes" which is owned by Liz Dawn(Vera Duckworth) were most of the stars go.

We saw the coronation street set from the windows of the first floor in Manchester's science museum. We wanted to see more so we left the museum and turned left, walked a couple of hundred yards and turned left into a side street at the bottom of which were large iron gates. this is the entry /exit the corrie stars use when arriving / leaving a filmimg session. we got a brilliant photograph of Michael Lavelle (Kevin Webster) with my son, and an autograph from Cilla! We saw David Platt and Jason Grimshaw but they were too busy to stop. Later we saw Molly, Michelle and Maria. Kim Marsh (Michelle) arrived in her car and later waved to us as she walked along the set. A very exciting day for both me and my son. It was a Monday so it would be worth a visit on this day as I presume this must be a filmimg day.

yes. i went to the museum today and upstairs, you can see the pub, devs shop, the cabin and theyy back gardens. if you go to the side of the museum you can see Gerrys

How utterly selfish of those (people), for want of a better word, to close the tours down. i have been a fan for the past 30+years, my grandson 12, and grandaughter 9, have been plaging my life to take them to Coronation Street as they are now avid fans. I dont think the people who decided to close the tours realised that the younger gerneration are growing up with corrie as we did and would love to see were it's filmed and see the houses, cabin, pub ect, shame on all of you who were invoilved in this decisition.

I think you're all forgetting that as the cast are filming 7 days a week now, it would be unfeasible to operate the tours. You can't have it both ways. I also think calling the management of Granada Studios selfish is immature and short-sighted. The fact of the matter is that it was then, and likely would be now, a financially unviable visitor attraction.

Get a grip Ninja Moose. What you are reading are very disappointed fans!!! I have been watching for 33 years and was planning a trip there this Spring with a friend of mine who is also a huge fan. It sucks!!!! that we will not be able to even get a glimpse of something we feel so close to!!!!

What a shame wanted to take my girls (12 and 14) this weekend.Have been a fan for years. very disapointed

I'm sorry Deborah, I already have a firm grip, not least upon Manchester's tourism industry, as I work on developing it. Of course I don't labour under the misapprehension that the character or set of Coronation Street is real.. so maybe i'm not the one needing to get a grip. On the other hand I do understand people are disappointed, but as I said earlier, tours just aren't feasible due to filming everyday. I for one would much prefer 5 episodes a week rather than a visit to a run down set every few years.. and i'm sure others would agree

Well that's a bummer. What a sad state of affairs that some bright spark at Granada TV decided to close the tours down. So much for people that have watched Corrie Street since it's inception. I think we should all stop watching. But, does anybody know WHY they closed the tours down? If so please reply to my e-mail address above.... thanx ...

This should help shine some light on tit...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granada_Studios_Tour

Yep it's true. can see the platts garden

hi my name is miss deeann kemble i am 27 years old from coventry and was wondering how do i get to met john from coronation street or write to him in person as i think he is a great guy in it and quited liked him alot and wanted to write to him to say what a great actor he is

I am seriously considering sending a petition to Granada Studios and the Manchester Tourist board in an attempt bring back the tours. Anyone interested??

I think the UK is the suckiest country in the world.. You would think that places like Coronation street and eastenders would open to the public. In the US you can go to movie sets and see how things are done. The UK has none of that .. What a load of rubbish.. Someone in the UK should realise some people may want to see these things and go see the srudios

Unfortunately, as an employee of the Tourist Board I don't think you'd get very far with your petition. Rather you should petition Granada Studios. Finally, the window from the MSIM has been blacked out because people kept taking photographs... Just have to stick to watching it on telly like most people i guess..

Those desperate to tour the set might find this interesting tho...
