Mardy-pants Martin Platt is leaving the street this week when he goes off to live in Liverpool with his new girlfriend Robyn. But did you know that Martin has been on the Street for 20 years? Yup, he arrived on the show in 1985 and in 1991 he married Gail, whose husband Brian Tilsley had been murdered. It didn’t take long for Martin to stray however, and he had an affair with fellow nurse Cathy Power but he and Gail managed to keep their marriage together. However, it all fell apart after Martin had another affair with nurse Rebecca Hopkins (played by Jill Halfpenny) and Gail threw him out. However, in a revealing interview with The Daily Record the actor who plays Martin, Sean Wilson, said that he reckons his departure from the show came about after he refused to go along with a controversial storyline.
Sean said that he had refused to take part in a storyline, in which his character would have had an affair with a girl even younger than Martin’s ex-girlfriend, Katy Harris. In real life, Sean’s a dad of two and happily married to wife Gaynor, a yoga-teacher. Sean told the paper: "I saw the boss and asked, 'The Harris family are leaving, does that mean that I am too?' He said, 'Oh no. On the contrary. We have, let's say, a controversial story lined up." But Sean believed the script was too controversial. And he feared his kids, Callum, seven, and Maisie, five, would be affected by any backlash from it. Sean is now hoping to get more TV work lined up and said he was in talks with Shameless and Clocking Off writer Paul Abbott.
I’m not sure I’ll miss Martin that much to be honest – the whole Katy Harris thing left me a bit cold. What do you think? Post to the blog and let us all know.

I agree. I've never really liked Martin's character that much. Maybe I find him a bit smug. And he pulls a really funny face when he gets angry like he's desperate for the loo. Still I'm sure Sean is a lovely guy and I wish him well in his future career outside of the street.
I think that the whole relationship with Katy was obscene and there was no justification for a storyline like that. Martin's character seems to have always had a bit of a selfish streak about him. He does what he wants, when he wants and feels quite justified about his behaviour. I'm glad Sean decided to refuse the 'new' controversial storyline -- I'm sure he doesn't want to be seen as the Poster Boy for perverts. Nothing about Martin's character seemed 'right'. I wish him well and applaud his courageous decision.
